Just recently got a 1983 c30 and ran it out of diesel. Been trying to purge the truck for hours. Anyone who has done this or knows any tips please let me know. I got a new secondary fuel pump installed and bought the primary, but i cannot get the old one off.

I have turned the valve so that diesel and air have come out, and then closed it but I am not sure what order this goes in exactly. any advice would be great

I've found that you'll likely want to remove the primary fuel filter and fill it full of diesel fuel first.

The valve on the top of the filter is to help air escape, the only problem is that filter is very hard to get to fill on it's own when the fuel pump on the engine is pulling the fuel (and air) through it.

Crank the engine over in intervals (letting the starter cool) until you get a pretty steady stream of fuel out of the petcock on the filter (primary). You may get a helper to observe, then immediatly shut the valve.

Next, you can either continue to crank on the engine until it starts, will take about 6-long cranks with fuel up to the Injection pump before it will start to fire.

The 82-83 model fuel filters were the hardest to prime..

Hope this helps you get going!

Once both new filters are installed, remove all the glow plugs to allow the engine to crank over easily (no compression). Disable the glow plug system to prevent any shorts. Make sure all valves are closed on the fuel system and that all fuel lines are tight. Crank the engine over for 30 seconds, and then let the starter cool for a couple of minutes. Repeat process until fuel mist starts coming out of the glow plug holes. Replace glow plugs, enable glow plug system, and try to start the engine. Depressing the accelerator while cranking will help too. Once engine starts, keep the RPM's up a bit or else it will probably die due to trapped air in the system. It will continue to surge for a little while, until all the air escapes.

Good luck!

Another little trick is to unplug the Fuel shutoff red wire from the front of the IP when priming the filter.
This way the IP is not trying to suck the fuel and air into the pump.
Removing the glow plugs is not a bad idea if you have the sucker full of air.
With the IP disabled you can prime the filters untill you have fuel coming from the secondary filter without any air.
Reconnect the IP and roll it untill you have a good MIST of fuel blowing from the Glow plug holes.

Reinstall the glow plugs and give it a glow cycle and it should go right quick.
These can always be a bit tedious until you have done a few of them.

Running out of fuel is a carnal sin with a diesel. DONT DO IT;0)

Good luck

Thanks for the advice. Going to give it another try this aftternoon. I tried so long yesterday that the batteries are about dead. Have to keep it hooked up to the car with jumpercables now. Ugh hope I can get this thing going.

It's alive! I changed out the fuel filter (primary) I had already done the secondary and after a few minutes I had it running again! Thanks for all your help!
