I got out of work after my truck sat in 5 degree temps all day and it starts up and sounds like the top of the motor is open. The diesel rattle was super loud. It stayed like this until i got about a block down the road and then it just got quiet like someone turned off the loud switch? What makes it do this? It has done this before but nowhere near how loud it was this time. Is there something wrong or going to go wrong?
Thanks!

No. Let it warm up more next time.
I am not an expert on this, but think the excessive rattle you heard is caused by cold temperature advance and/or no pilot injection. Kinda like owning a Cummins for a few minutes. :)
Maybe one of our GM mechanics can comment further on this.
Take it easy, warm her up treat her like you love her... it's almost valentines day
