Synthetic oil for 2500-HD

I purcheased a 2006-Chevy 2500-HD last June & I'm almost at 3000 mis. I want to change my first oil change @ that mileage. I have heard that you cannot change over to Synthetic motor oil till you get 20k miles on engine or the rings won't seat. Is there any body out there that knows for sure before I screw-up a new engine? The dealership uses what ever they have on the shelf for a diesel. Anybodys help out there will be greatly appreciated.

I did my first oil change at 1K and then went to 5K to put synthetic in. I'm with you on the break in but I figured 5K was a good jumping over point.

Also, don't forget about the rear diff. I changed mine out at 5K also and I could not believe the metal in the lube. At the same time I pulled the cover and put a cover on from PML. The covers and trans pans can be found at www.yourcovers.com on the net. I had both on my 96 Burban and now have them on my '05 Silverado.

They seem well built with less $$ than Mag-Hytec.

I wouldn't be that concerned about it. I put nothing else than synthetic oil in my engines. Keeps em clean, no sludge and better lube with extended intervals. There are some cars that come with synthetic oil out of the factory (VW, Mercedes Benz, BMW, Cadillac). I am not sure what kind of engine oil is in my new 07 Silverado Classic built in 12/06 I just got, but if I go to the hardware store and check for CJ-4 rated 5W40 engine oil, it is synthetic. The CI-4 rated 15W40 I see in the store is normal engine oil. All new 07's with a DPF must use CJ-4 rated oil.

Miles won't make any difference...I changed my Liberty Diesel to synthetic after the first 1000 miles. Do what makes you feel good. I run synthetic in everything I own including; motorcycles, generators and lawn tractors.

Switch over at will...enjoy. My 2005 LLY got it at 5K, IIRC.
