With alternative glow-cycle timing(manual/programmable),what would be a safe maximum length of time to glow 60gs?

ECT disconnected, PCM demands glow for 12-15 seconds - test the 60G with your batteries and a jumper cable, see how long till full glow, tip to middle.

60G's can burn open, but they seldom swell

I've tested a handful of G60s for 15 minutes of continuous glow using a fully charged automotive battery and jumper cables. A few years ago, Brad Cameron, a GM diesel tech from Alberta reportedly tested a G60 for 8 hours continuous glow. No failures in those we tested.

The G60 & QH glow plug comparison test/review I did a few years ago showed that the G60 reached maximum tip temp in ~20 seconds, based on the length of the tip that glowed orange.

My home built controller glows the plugs for 10 to 12 seconds on my hot-rod 6.2L. The 60G's in there now are 3 to 4 years old.

from what I have read, the 60G's are self regulating, meaning they wont burn themselves out if left on too long

Yes, the AC-60G glow plugs are of the PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) variety, which are a self-regulating to approximately 1400 degrees F. The earlier AC-11G were also, but I had a couple of new examples fail (wouldn't re-light for a second 15 minute test) in the tests I conducted back when they first became available.

So,with 60Gs in my 18:1 motor would 10-15 seconds be a good starting point for cold weather start(below freezing)?I`m installing a programmable controller from Peninsular as some as I recieve it.

Yes - but make yourself a reminder to cut it back in warmer weather.

It may be possible to hook it into your Engine Coolant sensor, so it's automatic, based on ambient effect on engine coolant

You might PM Toughguy, see how they handled it on the 18:1 Project Truck

Thanks,I will.I figure I`ll use seat-of-the-pants tech to get the best times for conditions.
