I only had about 18,000 mies on a GM crate NV4500 when my truck was totalled. The impact caused the upper left corner of the front mounting surface to break away leaving a hole. The bellhousing was destroyed.I have an opportunity to buy another trans w/someparts(input shaft)missing for $250.I talked to a trans guy and he said it would run around $800 to change cases. He said the case is split and if only one half is damaged,I should price the 1/2 case from GM.It could save labor,if that was the only damage he could just replace that.Just asking for other`s opinions on a direction to take.I don`t know the cost of the left 1/2 yet.

How about taking it to a welder and having him weld the broken piece back on? I believe the case is cast steel and not cast iron, so it's reparable. We used to do this repair all the time on forklift PowerShift trannies.

Actually, cast iron is reparable, you just have to preheat it in an oven before welding. This would mean disassembling it and taking the case to a welder.

The piece is long gone and was distorted. This case is toast.Or,half of it anyway.I wonder if I can teardown the used unit and take the case to him.Has anyone torn one down before?Do I need any special tools?

Are you shure there are two halves to your case? Mine is a one piece case with shifter housing, nose piece, overdrive case, and tail houing.

No,I`m not sure.I got this info from a shop near a job I`m doing. My tranny is sitting at my brother-in-law`s and I haven`t been by to check.I guess that would be a consideration,eh?What year is yours?I`m going out to check my`92.Both of mine are GM replacements.I think the trans guy said "some" are split.

It is not that big of a job to switch the parts between the bad case and good one. I have done mine like this have about 10-15 thousand miles on it without any problems.

a5150nut is correct, and I missed it before I guess - the NVG4500 has a 1-piece case. The ZF trannies have 2-piece cases, split longitudinally.

Ok,well there`s my answer. Thanks to both of you.I guess the tranny guy was stuck on current stuff. This is pitiful, all I had to do is look.I sure am gettin`lazy.

Well you sure had me going :D I rechecked my sources and found no mention of a split NVG4500.
