Howdy folks,
New to the forum, and back in 6.2 owner land. Picked up a clean 82' 2500 after bugging the owner for a year, it seems to have 103k on it, runs great but the engine seems to scream on the freeway, it has the 3 speed tranny, my last 6.2 had the 700R4 and was my favorite truck(1500 sub).I never rememberd it winding out like this rig.
Questions, Is it possible this was re trannyed with a gas job w/lower ratios?
Do the 6.2 engines have governors to keep them from blowing like my commecial rigs?
I know many of these were built with 4:10 gearing, and this truck has a tow package, but I am afraid to take it over 55 mph. The trany seals were replaced recently, and the vaccum pressure is gone and needs to be fixed as well as all gauges other than speedo and fuel are dead. It is a super clean truck and the original milage test showed 23/25 mpg!!
Any info is wanted, thanks in advance.

Stock tranny in an '82 3/4 ton was the TH400 3-speed with no lock-up torque convertor. Probably does have 4.10 gears, that was the pretty standard setup for the 3/4 ton diesels in the '80's. Your 1500 probably had 3.42 gears, so along with an overdrive tranny with a lock-up torque convertor, it had a MUCH lower rpm at highway speeds.

All GM transmissions have the same gear ratios between gas and diesel, just different torque convertors and shift points.

Yes, the 6.2L has an rpm-limiting governor (3600 to 4200 rpm), so you can't harm the engine by driving highway speeds. It's more of an annoyance to your ears than it is a cause for concern.

Good Day!

rpm @ 60 mph: ~ 2710 + TC slippage (200 rpm or so)

Assumptions: 245/75R16 tires, 4.10 gears.

73 mph would give you ~ 3300 rpm plus TC slippage, which would put you right close to the gov.

You could probably drive this truck all day for years @ 70 mph, if you didn't lose your sanity doing so.

Blessings!
