Price is still going up here. Filled up for $2.85 a gallon. Saw some stations 20 miles north selling #2 for as high as $3.19.

Hi
Before xmas we our prices were $1.059 a liter for both diesel and gas,and heating fuel was down to $0.76 a liter.
Then our supplier told us their was a shortage of diesel and our diesel prices are now at $1.159 a liter and $0.97 a liter for heating fuel
They never elaborated to exactly where the shortage is,but i'm 100 % sure it is'nt any where close to the refinerys were our fuel comes from.
I guess they expect us to belive them........

Before our elections (November), I saw diesel as low as 2.25/gal. That station is now at 2.59/gal. Just a few miles away most stations are around 2.75-2.80.

and in Sweden we are happy to pay about $5.71 per US gallon.

I should probably drive something small like my wife's Mercedes
A-class. Instead bought one more old Chevy pick'em up truck
this week and keep dreaming of a mint condition K30 or M1008.

Well oil's back down under $55/barrel but I hope nobody's surprised that fuel prices haven't dropped proportionally. Around here diesel's going for $2.60-$2.70, gasoline is $2.30-$2.40 for 87 octane. Since I'm getting rid of my diesel (unless a garage or shop to work on it magically appears) it looks like I'll be more concerned with the latter from now on.

Diesel prices have been holding steady at $2.74 at the local Flying J here in SE Idaho for the last three weeks. I just put 25 gallons in my OEM and my biggest beef is that the new ULSD pumps cut off my Visa checkcard at $50 and I have to run a "double transaction" to fill my 40 gallon aux AND my 26 gallon OEM!

I just returned from a 2,500 mile round trip to NW MO. Prices near the interstates ranged from a low of $2.349 to a high of $2.559, oth coming and going. Here in north central Florida, local prices are around $2.619, but near I-75, they're $2.749.

My brother in law owns a small grocery store in a small town in central Alabama and he received a shipment of offroad diesel yesterday and the price has dropped from $2.099 to $1.899/gallon. I don't know what the taxes are in Georgia for onroad diesel but the trend is at least in the right direction. Ed

Hello All,

I'll tell you why diesel is way more expensive now than about 5 years ago when I think it was close to $ 1.10 in most places. Its going to the war effort, I can personally tell you from 6 years in the army as a Cavalry Scout, the military consumes a helluva lot of diesel. Everything runs off of diesel or some blend of it, i.e. JP-8. From small 1k generators, and even power washers, yeah you read that right, a 5 horsepower diesel, power/ pressure washer the size of a honda civic engine. All the way up to our tanks and helicopters. And I can will tell you that it takes about 5-7 gallons of diesel just to turn on the PowerPack (diesel engine turbine w/ allison transmission) in the Abrams tank, and about another 3-5 just to turn it off. Plus the 1/2 mile per gallon you burn while doing close to 57 mph, in a 70 ton beast that can hit a watermelon two miles away on the move. Man forget my LMM duramax, I want my 1800 horsepower, diesel turbine w/ allison tranny back.

Brave Rifles!

YOU WANNA BE A MARTYR AND RECEIVE YOUR 72 VIRGINS, LET ME KNOW I'M SURE WE CAN WORK SOMETHING OUT!!!!!!!!!

Hello All,

The military does use a tremendous amount of fuel. However, it is a very small percentage when compared fuel used by the homefront for commercial and consumer purposes. Also, it impacts local fuel pricing very little, if at all. Fuel for military use is procured locally, in this case, Kuwait and SA, among others. We don't currently ship or divert US oil/fuel allotments into the current theater. Tax money pays for it, and we pay the tax, but the reality is, the military is paying pennies on the dollar for fuel compared to what we pay at home. Actually, it is cheaper on fuel when the military is operating in the oil rich countries. They are currently paying less than $.50 a gallon.

There's only one reason fuel prices are what they are now. Because they can.

Very true DmaxMaverick,

I was just pointing out the great power of diesel, how a whole force can sustain itself so long as they have it. Diesel innovation is only going to get better within the next 2-3 years. The military/governments have always been a pusher for more advancements in technology.

The price of Diesel has been on a steep rise in the Los Angeles area for no apparent reason, 2 weeks ago, it could be found for a relative steal of 2.55 (87 octane was 2.28) and Today, I couldn't find less than 2.87 (87 octane was 2.65).

In Friday NYTs Business section <http://www.nytimes.com/2007/03/16/business/16opec.html?_r=1&oref=slogin> Jad Mouawad reported that OPEC seems to be content with the level of crude pricing at about $60/barrel... there is no plan to increase shipments , as of now. Last year OPEC twice ratcheted down production to avoid having market prices dip beneath $50/barrel.

Closer to home ABC news reported that a late-winter surge in demand led up to the current refinery downtime for the seasonal re-configuration to maximize gasoline output for the comming summer driving campaign.

I note that fuel prices plateau when the Persian Gulf is tense.

The best going rate is around $2.99 for Diesel with regular gas about the same. The other day, while not in my diesel truck, I saw a station with $2.89...

At least it is on par with RUG unlike a few months ago when diesel was as expenisve if not more than SUPER... I believe it is some wierd cycle called CEO pay bonus that drives the price of fuel, I mean, refining capacity and supply. Now that winter is over there is not as high a demand for home heating oil, which allows the price of diesel to simmer down a little...

 $3.299 to $3.479 in Southern Maryland. [20+ miles south of Washington, D.C.] I guess this is the way the marketing guys watch the "Trends" in the automotive arena. They shake up the prices a couple times a year and when the gasoline prices fall everyone breathes a sigh of relief; [thats all the media reports] except the small but growing number diesel owners.
Notice the diesel price never fell at the same rate as the gasoline prices. Since diesels are becoming more popular they just wanted to get the price above gasoline so they can "Change" what used to be the norm. Now that they have succeded we will soon forget that diesel has always been cheaper than gasoline. I doubt the new lower sulpher content has this much effect on the price.
I may be wrong but I think its just a way for the oil companies to make more money on diesel fuel due to the increasing sales of diesel vehicles.

I'm pissed! I grew up on a farm in northern CA and we have always had diesel pickups. I have watched diesel prices since I was a little kid and remember when diesel was a LOT cheaper than gas. I was mad when diesel hit 3.29 and stayed there all summer down in Bakersfield. But last week it hit 3.59 and has stayed there. Gas prices- 3.13 for supreme and like 2.89 or 99 or something for reg. I just can't believe how much they are profiting from selling diesel at these prices! And people thought gas prices were high.

Just filled up tonight, I only use about a tank full a month in my 97 3/4 ton Suburban. I got fuel at a 7-11 on Rosser Ave., just off I64 in Waynesboro, Virginia for $3.16. Hess and Costal Mart in Waynesboro were $3.25 to $3.29., Next cheapest was the Costal Mart in Greenwood at $3.18.

I guess I am lucky compared to some others, but I have to say that I am giving more and more thought to a WVO conversion kit. With prices going the way they are it would not take long to pay for itself, if I can find a good source for the oil. There is a company in the Senanadoah Valley that picks it up from resturants in the area. I have not done the research with the locals to see if they do it for free or charge for the service yet.

3 weeks ago I was paying 2.89. Then it started to climb. When I filled up yesterday it was 3.13. Same station today was 3.25!!! All the stations around here are in the 3.2x range now. Still less expensive to drive the Waggy with a diesel than a gasser

I am definitely looking at alternatives now. Even running 25% filtered WVO and 75% diesel would be a significant cut in my fuel expense.

I just returned from a trip from my home town, Hemet, Ca to Southern Idaho. The price varied from a low in Cedar City, Utah of $3.19 to a high of $3.79 when I got home to Hemet. OUCH! But my son-in-law's farm is now paying $3.45 a gallon, buying it in 10,000 gallon increments.

Here is what bugs me: In May of this year I made my first trip with my truck. Gas was at $3.40 to $3.60 a gallon in central California while diesel was about $2.85. Now, diesel is significantly higher than gasoline. That was ULS fuel then as it is now. So someone explain to me why the price of diesel moved up so much more than gasoline?

11-07-2007, 09:26
The answer that the industry will tell you is "all the refineries have switched to making heating oil" which keeps them from turning out diesel. Crap I tell you, we need more refineries and Wall Street idiots need to stop with their speculation which is driving the barrel prices through the roof.

As bad as the prices are how much is it necessary to fill up? I know we have to fill up about every 3-4 days and thats on slow times. when we are busy we fill up every day. and to keep the cost down we usually fill up every day while the tank is still over the Half marker. per week it can cost as much as $400 for fuel.

Hemet, California, about 65 miles from you, Shell station has diesel at $4.19.9 ! It went up 10 cents on Thursday, and another 10 cents on Friday. At this rate we should be at $5 a gallon in another week or so.

What is the explanation for this rapid rise in price? I should think with our economy at or near recession state, there would be some drop in demand for diesel fuel.

I was watching the Pixar movie "Cars" last night where Lightning McQueen and the Porsche go off for a "drive" on route 66. It scares me to think this would be a thing of the past due to the high price of fuel, global warming, and all the rest. http://www.eia.doe.gov/bookshelf/brochures/diesel/

Why are diesel fuel prices higher than gasoline prices?
Until several years ago, the average price of diesel fuel was usually lower than the average price of gasoline. In some winters when the demand for distillate heating oil was high, the price of diesel fuel rose above the gasoline price. Since September 2004, the price of diesel fuel has been generally higher than the price of regular gasoline all year round for several reasons. Worldwide demand for diesel fuel and other distillate fuel oils has been increasing steadily, with strong demand in China, Europe, and the U.S., putting more pressure on the tight global refining capacity. In the U.S., the transition to low-sulfur diesel fuel has affected diesel fuel production and distribution costs. Also, the Federal excise tax on diesel fuel is 6 cents higher per gallon (24.4 cents per gallon) than the tax on gasoline.

Maybe some OTR's will respond, but I talked to a trucker last year about fuel costs, and was told they use some sort of discount fuel card when filling up, which provides for a reduction in fuel cost. I didn't dig further in our short conversation, but it would appear there is some sort of relief program in effect for the OTR industry. And, I couldn't help thinking that this is altering the reality of and discussion about fuel costs.

the cost is still at least a dollar more than it was last year at this time. so places like fedex are changing how they do things like modifying vehicles to be more aerodynamic, routing to eliminate left turns, never idling in the yard, etc.

whats crazy is the price of biodiesel is up to 4.60/gl. because the price of methanol has gone up over 300% since sept 07. since the two countries that make the methanol aren't getting along too well(chile and argentina). i'm waiting for them to start making bio with ethanol or butanol(different process but better product) or if they were making methanol from a biomass instead of a petroleum product that would be more stable.

Wow, I guess we should feel a lot better now! Our prices on diesel here in Southern California seem to have stablized for the time being. Here in Hemet, diesel is sitting at $5 and hasn't moved much at all for the past month, while gasoline has continued to climb. At one time, gas was $4 and diesel was $5. Now, gas is around $4.55 average for regular and diesel is still $5. Somehow it makes it less painful. The uncertainty caused by the continually escalating prices has a terrible effect on the morale of the consumers. The question begs to be asked "when is this ever going to stop going up?"

I'm pretty sure that the global warming crowd is happy with the high prices because it has finally curbed demand. I'm still uncertain as to the truth or lack thereof on that question as far as human impact is concerned, but I think this inflation in fuel costs has answered the question that no one was willing to ask; that is, what will the impact on the global economy be of a big crackdown on CO2 emissions? High priced oil has answered it for us. It is a big and painful impact merely to halt rising demand for carbon based fuel. What will happen if we try to roll it backwards?

Amazing. In only a period of weeks, #2 diesel fuel prices have tumbled ~35% to under $3/gallon here in Minnesota.

I am looking forward to demand picking back up, and burning alot of this cheaper fuel this winter. (Right now, our volume of business has dropped off dramatically, the last two weeks at 1/3 of normal.)

When prices go up, we all look for answers why...so, when prices drop dramatically, there is less pain, but it makes sense to understand why.

Is it all about reduced demand, creating a surplus of supply?

Amazing. In only a period of weeks, #2 diesel fuel prices have tumbled ~35% to under $3/gallon here in Minnesota.

Depends on how much you believe in price manipulation.... Some of it is undoubtedly due to lower demand. Personally, I think a lion's share of the high prices were artificial (speculation and world producers pushing it).

There's also the worldwide geopolitical aspect. When oil prices are high, industrialized nations hurt and OPEC/Russia et. al. make big bucks (wealth transfer). If governments have the power to influence oil prices, they could do it in ways that help/hurt others. For example, the collapse of the Soviet Union in the 1980's was as much or more about the rock bottom oil price than a lack of competitiveness in military technology. I've heard it said that anything below $60/bbl currently hurts Iran and Russia very badly.

I'm surprised I haven't heard any pundit say that the high oil prices (and resulting gas/diesel pump prices) are what ultimately burst the housing bubble when it did. Personally, I think it's cause & effect - at least for the burst to happen at that particular time. It likely would have happened at some point, but the high energy costs forced it to happen a lot sooner.

This is why we need a U.S. energy market that is independent of world market forces. We have the resources to continue at present comsumption levels for the next 100-200 years - using only U.S. domestic oil/coal/gas/shale resources. This would produce reliable supplies and prices.

Since I got my little HHR "backup" a couple years ago, I've greatly reduced my use of the truck, reserve it now for only occasions when I need to haul something big/heavy in the bed, pulling a trailer or snow plowing my driveway. That being said, I haven't put fuel in the truck since first week of September. We're finally getting some snow here and I had to break out the truck and plow last week and I may need to use the heavy 4wd to commute to work a few days coming up if we get deep drifting, so I went to town a couple of days ago and fueled up the OEM tank. $2.89 at the local Flying J, 25 gallons hit me for $72. I still have a half a tank in the in-bed aux (about 20 gallons) that I'm trying to burn off now, but it's probably not winter blend and could be an issue if the temps go really low.

Last time fuel prices were that high, my dad and I started making our own biodiesel. We ran it for several years. However, after long-term use, we both ended up having fuel line issues; my dad's 95 Ford Powerstroke is getting a new fuel tank sending unit as we speak - it was all gummed up from the bio byproducts. My original 1995 DS4 injection pump also took a dump as a result. Neither of us feel like going through the hassle and mess the biodiesel caused. It was cheap, but what a hassle. I especially don't care to run anything like that through my brand-new injectors and rebuilt engine.

Diesel fuel spiked to $5.06 here in SW MO, but has stabilized to around $4.69 on average. I paid $3.66 just two weeks ago.

I paid $3.64 for gasoline last night for my wife's car.

I hate those auto shut-off pumps! Around here, they sometimes shut off at $75, and that don't cut it at all these days!

The problem has to do with the way the pre-authorization works. If they pre-authorize for $50 then they could loose $50 if they let the pump run to $100. On the other hand, if they authorize for $100 and you only use $30, the other $70 of your credit limit is tied up for about 24 hours. For some, it doesn't matter, but for others it could mean no cigarettes till tomorrow...

DmaxMaverick
03-15-2022, 08:25
What I see, where I've been in CA anyway, is a pre-authorization for $1.00 (swipe at the pump), which only verifies the credit account is in good standing. I've never seen it more than $1.00. The pump is then allowed to continue. The limit is set by the individual store, a local choice, and it varies from location to location (same brand). This limits fraud, theft, and overcharge amounts, while not imposing too much burden on the customer. It can be inconvenient, but understandable. A customer can either make multiple swipes/purchases, or simply make the purchase inside the store, which will authorize any amount you specify. I recall a few years ago (the previous oil panic), limits to $75 at most places, some less, when that fiasco began.

JohnC
03-15-2022, 09:16
You may be right, or some have changed based on the amounts involved. If they only authorize $1 then shutting off at $100 is already a big risk.

DmaxMaverick
03-15-2022, 10:02
I don't know if it's a company or store policy/recommendation, or some regulation (CA has a couple). I could probably find out if I looked around, but I don't really care. There's always risk, but there has to be a balance that keeps customers, and doesn't cost the company (or insurance?) too much. $100 seems like a relatively large risk to you and me, but an occasional loss, even at that full amount, may not be worth much effort on a corporate level. When I filled yesterday, I started with about 1/4 tank. The pump shut off before the nozzle tripped, and I didn't yet hear the fuel rising in the filler hose. It put me over the full mark on the gage, but it wasn't as full as it could have been, maybe a gallon or two short. Not really an inconvenience, other than having to average the fuel mileage over more than one fill. The big deal was the price tag.

When I first started driving semi's in 1971 I remember stopping at a mom and pop place that only had one diesel pump and one gasoline pump.
Diesel was a whopping 17.9 or 19.9 cents a gallon. Other stations were about 4 cents higher, so I would get fuel at the mom and pops and eat lunch while the truck filled up.
Just one hose and nozzle so it was one tank at a time. No dual fill like modern truck stops are today.
Down here in Central Florida diesel is 4.99 per gallon most places and the highest I saw was $5.59 per gallon. GO Figure.
What really hurts is I have an LS 3 6.2 litre in our 1500 Sierra Denali truck, why it came with an LS 3 and not the standard LS 2 is anybody's guess.
But it probably wouldn't matter because the LS 2 is supposed to burn 93 octane also.
Our GM Tech say's he's run into that before on Canadian built trucks that are not built to ship to the US.
It was meant to be a Canadian vehicle and has a block heater also. Owners manual was in French and decals on the windows are also in French..
I have to burn 93 octane and that's running anywhere from $4.89 to $5.39 per gallon.
And the wife has a 2021 Camaro 2.0 T 4 cyl . It's supposed to run 93 octane also.
We had just between a 1/4 and 1/2 tank and I topped it off. $50.
It's not a very big tank. GO FiGURE !
Thanks Joe Biden, it ain't Putin doing it.
I think just the fumes that come off of an average fill up are around $5 LOL

Who knows... this fuel cost increase could revive the 6.2L diesel engine. One reason, as Casey pointed out, is that you can run bio/home-brew in them. Just gotta be careful. I would not put home brew in a current diesel... The cost of replacing the injectors or high pressure pump should be enough to discourage the curious...

Since getting our 17-mpg 2001 Duramax back on the road last summer (after the head gasket project), we've not driven our 2016 Malibu much at all. Those two vehicles have recently switched places in our driveway. The Malibu gets ~35-mpg, and regular unleaded (87 octane) is currently about 80 cents a gallon less than diesel. :(

I sure wish diesel and gasoline were the same price. My wife's GMC Acadia with the 3.6L will get 20 mpg on a good day with a tail wind, but averages around 17 mpg with combined city/highway driving. That's what my 6.5L turbo diesel averages! I'd much rather drive the Tahoe than the Acadia, but if we have the option, we will probably drive her car more often, since gasoline is nearly a buck a gallon cheaper.

I wrote an editorial on diesel fuel back in 2008 that discussed, among other things, why diesel fuel was more expensive than gasoline... The reason is because once diesel fuel became ULSD in 2007, it could be exported to Europe. Our Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel fuel became a commodity that had marketability beyond Canada and Mexico. Till then, diesel fuel for as long as I'd owned a diesel (mid 1980s) was always 20-100 cents cheaper than regular unleaded...

Trump got us to energy independence.... which was not what the gov or the oil industry wanted... "Independence" made it a lot harder to use the argument about world events controlling gas prices. "Independence" made it harder to use oil to manipulate foreign affairs. "Independence" made it harder to grease the wheels in congress...

Around 1:00 PM the same price was still posted (same 8:00 AM posting), so I headed on over. When I got there the pump said $6.28. I looked for the next cheapest near by and it was $5.49. When I got there it was $5.99. I said "f" it and filled up. I figured if I went to the next station it would be even worse.

No president Nancy Pelosi, yet. That would only happen if both, the pres and vice were lost, simultaneously. "President Harris" would appoint a vice, which still leaves Nancy #2 (read that however you like). With any luck (and/or a fair election), that will only be an option until November but, alas. I know that urban sprawl over the last 50 + years in CA had pushed commuters out into the nether reaches of sanity for time/miles of a daily commute. Now add $8 gas...

California was among the first to repurpose gas tax revenue to fill holes in their state's general budget - something the gas tax was never supposed to be used for... Roads, bridges, highway infrastructures were the reasons used for a gas tax in the first place. It was easy to persuade voters to vote for a tax that put motorists on the hook for roads, bridges, etc.

It can't cross burned bridges. The EPA doesn't care if you are dead on the shoulder, or can't cross an intersection quick enough to not get T-boned.
