Needs advise on 85 1/2 ton 6.2 3spd auto. This truck is absolutely gutless, I don't think I could pull a chevette with a tailwind!. New to the diesel stuff but have checked the aircleaner, and found the intake to be coated with soot big time. Also when stomping on throttle clouds and clouds of black smoke, LOTS. Can barely keep 50 mph on highway. Where do I begin? Thanks.

Good Day!
Black smoke is 1) too much fuel (unlikely) or 2) not enough air. Has this truck sat awhile? Maybe a critter made a nest in your intake, which even new from the factory is pretty restrictive. I'd be tempted to check it out, or install a new air filter & disconnect & remove everything outside the air filter housing TEMPORARILY (don't normally want to be drawing under-hood (hot) air) & take another test drive. If the black smoke is significantly reduced, fix your air intake. (I'd consider doing a search & do Dr. Lee's Swanger's intake mod.)
Blessings!

In an acronym, EGR.
Sounds as though the famous EGR system has mal-functioned and is smothering your precious air supply into the engine with already burned diesel exhaust, yes, in the intake.
Solution?
Disable the EGR system, your engine will thank you.
Trace down the rubber vacuum line that goes into the air cleaner. Chase it down to the bank of solenoids on the drivers' side rear of the engine above the valve cover. Cut the the vacuum line and insert a bolt of the appropriate size in both ends of the hose.
This will prevent vacuum from opening the nasty EGR valve in the intake manifold. The default is closed.
Go drive it like you stole it.
Otherwise, it's a pump problemo, most likely EGR tho.
