This may be a stupid question but I'm new to diesels and need all the info I can get.
I don't need a powerful truck for hauling, I'm looking for the most mpg I can get in a daily driver. I've been looking at used chevy pickups but every one I come across has a turbo.
My question:
If a 6.5 came with a factory turbo can the turbo be removed? If so, is there much of a mpg gain without the turbo?
To remove the turbo is not a real issue.
The issue is the engine was set up with all the IP calibrations to use the turbo.
If you really want the best MPG the issue is to add some goodies to help the turbo work well, like better exhaust.
keeping ones boot out of the fan helps too.
One the early TD engines with a mechanical IP the pump could be set back some and run as an NA engine
And Gm produced a number of n\a EFI 6.5's, but you would need to stick with the 94-95 models to downgrade the chip.
Or, just compare your feet - if the right one is same size as the left one, you should get good to better mileage with the turbo.
Otherwise, it's Katie, bar the door..............
There is an article 6.5 fuel economy check out http://www.thedieselpage.com/features/elcamino.htm

From what I understand after reading the Maximizing Diesel Fuel Economy page, the best way for me to get a high fuel mileage diesel pickup is to put a 6.2 diesel engine in my 1976 chevy pickup.
It currently has a 700r4 auto trans with a 2.77 rear end gear, the truck has been done over new suspension, brakes everything. The doors, fenders, hood and truck bed are all fiberglass the only thing metal is the cab. This combo should yield me 30 mpg!
If I find a complete 6.2 diesel engine from a donor truck, to make the swap what else do I need? Will my sending unit in my gas tank work, it has an extra outlet for a return line.
Anyone out there have a complete 6.2 diesel engine for sale?

Where are you located? I have a 6.2 that is a running motor that I would sell. Shippinf would be the main issue. My 1984 G20 van gets about 25-28mpg at highway speeds. It is a 700r4 with 3.43 gears. I would think your truck would get at least 30 if you drive it nice.
