View Full Version : Casting numbers On Goodwrench engine
Just bought a complete 6.5 with everything to put in my 91 Burb
Its a Good WENCH He he replacement engine that was installed back into a 92 truck and the casting # ends in 506
What can you folks tell me about this block series ?????
Thing has a leaky head gasket I am told but I have not done a Post Mortem on it yet.
Gauranteed to be crack free (Block crank)

506 anything 97+, there several "revisions" of that cast.
In short, that's a piston oil spray block.
Pull the pan to ID a few things.
The first 506's had the large outside bolts, just like a 599 6.5 or 6.2, the later had smaller holes to combat cracking.
Good thing you got the "guarantee" to be crack free.
For a non-turbo 6.2L replacement application, it'd be fine.
This is already a turbo engine and I intend on running it as such.
Going to freshen it up and use it to rplace my 6.2
Going to take some fabrication to get the turbo to fit where I want it but its doable.
Thanks for the info. :0)

The engine that failed and was written about in my Part I article was a 506 block cast April 10, 2000. The engine that I am now running with splayed mains is a 506 block cast January 10, 2000.
Look at the date code and report it. It will consist of a letter and three digits. The letter corresponds to the month, the first two digits correspond to the day and the last digit corresponds to the year.
One thing for sure if this block shows any cracks the seller said he would replace it with a 599 block if I like.
If this should be the case I will do the 599 block happily.
The 94 I did this summer had well over 200K on it and was in fine condition for a rebuild without boring and or any bottom end work.

599's crack too.
I have one in that was gonna get splayed mains. It has two cracked webs in it.
Consequently, I'm searching for a good block to replace it with now.
Let just hope I get lucky and the 506 is a good one.
It has low miles on it but as well all know that dont seem to make any difference.
It would really be interesting to know why some will run 200K of hard use and be fine and others are cream puffed and break in short order?????

I got a low mileage '506 put together for a blow-it-up project, but it was all good and it's the scary '506. We'll find out how well the simple stud girdle really works. Ain't wort the time splaying. Large spray coolers, large outside bolt holes...
Ditto on what RJ said, '599's crack too, I got one of mine warrantied by a friend who needed a crankshaft, I get a replacement one as soon as he can get access to the corner of his shop.

Hmmm were any of the 6.5's other than the new AMG blocks any good??

Howdy
I have heard that the 1993 6.5 was a good block, with proper cooling mods done....

I can attest to the fact that '599's crack too... my '93 went at 14x,xxx. '141's go bad as well. A friend of mine had his crack at 20x,xxx... John knows who this is.
Well I got the 6.5 apart this morning and the THING IS JUNK.
Looked great untill I got the head off the RH side.
Number 8 cylinder had the cute little crack by the lower rear bolt.
Crack was only about 1/4inch long but enough to pressurize the cooling system.
The fellow I got it from has found me over 100 military blocks from Hummers to choose from.
All bare and gauranteed to be crack free.
After chatting with the guy he claims many of the engines had very little miles on them.
Anyone here have any idea what the military casting numbers are for the 6.5's ?????
Anyway its gonna be a piece it together sort of thing.
I was told that many of the engine this fellow has are take outs that had very liitle wrong but were raplaced rather than fixed and then the used ones sold off.
I know the government wastes stuff by the metric buttload but this seems a bit much, any input??????
Botom line is I dont have any more dollars out of pocket so It will be ok.

Doesn't matter if the engine is military or not, it's going to share the same casting number/designation that we're all familar with already.
599, 929, 141, 506 <- will all be single piece rear main seal.
6.2's are a little tricky.
All have the '660 casting, but later will be 599, and you'll ID them by measuring the bore.
Good luck!
Strange about the bolt-hole crack on the deck. I've viewed a few blocks with this problem, but they were Hummer/Gvan engines with the rear mounted turbo that heats up everything.

Robyn:
I'm looking for a block also. Just wondering who would have a hundred of em. Paul
OMG
Have not a clue on that one.
Keep an eye on craigs list and ebay.
John
Its my understanding that any of the 506 blocks can crack at the rear bolt hole in #8 hole.
This is the first one I have seen with it there but thats of no real value either as I have not been into all that many 6.5's
Hummers seemed to have an issue with it from what I have read.
