I have run across different converters for the 700r4 behind a 6.2 I thought
that all of them had 6 bolts (just like th400's) attaching to the flexplate but, when I got a 700trans done for my buddies 6.2 it had a 3 bolt converter. I told the trans rebuilder that is was wrong, he said a 6 bolt is a special order, Iam not believing him. Iam I wrong thinking this?

Diesel converters are all 6 bolt that I have ever seen.
The 3 bolt versions are generally gassers

The older 700's used 6 bolts, while the later models have switched to 3 bolts. I'm not sure why or for sure when. Almost every new convertor you buy now will be a 3 bolt.

I wouldn't worry about using a 3 bolt. I've had a 3 bolt gasser TC behind my 6.2L since 1996 w/over 100,000 miles put on it by me. It's just now wearing out, and I've pulled some large loads all over the country.

If you'll read the articles Dr. Lee wrote (available in the 2004 reprints book http://www.thedieselpage.com/back04.htm ) regarding his 700R4 rebuild, you'll see that he used a 3 bolt convertor.

I have a 3 bolt diesel converter with at least 30K to 40K with no problems. I know that isn't a lot of miles but I doubt any problems will come from the converter anytime soon.

At about 110k my original 3 bolt converter on my '86 6.2 had a bolt start coming loose from the flexplate. I fought noises for long time trying to figure out what it was (under certain RPM's). Pulled engine at 150k for rebuild and found the problem...

It's now got a Dayco B30 that's a 6-lug converter on it, and a new flexplate...

I one that says the 3 bolt converters suck..

Just my .02!

My Art Carr prepped super towing diesel 700R4 came from Carr with a 3 bolt converter.

Yacking at the local converter rebuilder and his idea agrees with mine.
The 700 diesel converters are far less abundant than say one for a 5.7 gasser. This makes it more difficult to always have 6 bolters on hand to rebuild.

The 3 bolt units will hold but I always spec out a 6 bolt unit.
Almost any rebuilder worth their salt will do a six bolt cover if you request it.

I have seen 6 bolters behind 400's as well as 3 bolters.
3 bolts were common in a TH350 but the converters will swap between the two.
With the amount of shake rattle and roll as well as the torque I prefer 6 bolts on my diesels.

Just my humble opinion.

3 bolt converter is fine. Just make sure you put blue locktite on the threads no matter which converter you use. I even put it on the bellhousing bolts. tpitt
