Will a later model power train computer (98 and newer) work in a 96 or 97. I know the 98 and newer models have the security feature and a later box won't work in a 96 or 97.

Yes, it will work I have a 99 L65 PCM in my 98 K1500 which came with a L56 PCM only thing was doing the theft deterrent relearn which is a 30 minute key on key off cycle at required times, if you have access to a tech 2 the learn is a force function.

Oops, I just reread the question again, now I'm not sure you are wanting to put a OBDII PCM in what I believe is a OBDI truck not sure on that one. 97 to 2000 interchangeable once you do the relearn 99-2000 better ones to use as they have the HO program
