I need to replace the pulley on my 1994 6.5td since it has quite a bit of play.
Can the pulley be replaced with the pump still mounted to the engine?
Also, what tool do I need to remove the pulley from the pump?
Thanks,
Bill Lucas

There is a tool for the pulleys of the A/C compressor and power steering pump. You can rent it from places like Auto-Zone or purchase it at some of same parts houses.
Remember the pulley has to be the same as the one that came off. If there is enough clearence the pulley can be removed on the truck. The tool is about three or four inches long.
Say hello to Silvia for us.

Thanks Dennis,
I think I will try to rent the tool and replace the pulley. The pump was making a noise like a bearing going out. On inspection I found the pulley had a lot of
play, plus the serpentine belt was damaged.

Tell Bev that Sylvia said hello.

Are you sure it's pulley play, and not a broken shaft? They are prone to either. Anyhow, you'll find out when you get the pulley off.

Since I still have power steering I assume the shaft is ok.
Thanks,

They don't always shear off completely. I've seen one that was driven for about 1000 miles with a broken shaft (what's that noise....Oh, well....) before it finally stopped (and so did the noise).

Good advice to check the crank pulley, though. While you are there, check the balancer, too. Either of them can make mysterious noises.
