Hi does anyone know approximately how much a 6.2 weighs? I'm going to buy an engine stand this week and pop the motor and tranny this weekend. Tranny's getting a rebuild, motors getting new head gaskets..oil pan and rear main etc... but I want to make sure an engine stand that I purchase will hold this motor...what do you think I should use...a 750lb capacity...or maybe a 1 ton?

engine wieght. i just got one in on a palletthat shiped stripped as 730lbs.
I think that that was light and there is nothing much more than but the long block. I have heard from other on this sight that 1000 lb stand seems to be at its limit with one of these. I'll be picking up a 1250 lb stand in a few weeks. To strong is much better than to weak.

No way on the 750#. A 3/4 or 1 ton should be fine. If the "country of origin" for the stand is questionable, be sure to at least double your expected weight. I've seen Harbor Freight 1 ton stands strain with one on it. The 6.2 weighs over 750#. Overkill is good advice here.

A 1250lb capacity is fine. Most of the heavier ones I've seen use the old "bar and muscle" method of rotating the engine, while my 1250lb OTC stand has a really nice, smooth crank-driven gear in the head that makes positioning the engine effortless.

Are you saying that your engine stand has a built in crank for turning the engine? Would you have a link or a manufacturer where this could be seen?

Yes I belive the 730# was way light.

I believe this (http://www.otctools.com/products/detail.php?id=1200) is the model I have. I got it a year or 2 ago from the Cornwell dealer where I worked.

Hello all,

mikeandwendy74: I agree the engine should be 710lbs and dont forget to add the trans. I agree overkill is best here. I have seen the 3 legged engine stands almost lean over with 750 lbs on them. the kind like NH2112 has here is best and these new ones you can rotate effortless. I seen one on horsepower tv and it was great!! too bad I already bought one.

Just my 2 cents,
Don
