I have an 01 2500 DMax with shade over 72000 miles on it. Recently my oil change light came on, but I'm running Amsoil 15w-40 Heavy duty Diesel oil which only needs to be changed every 25000 miles or once a year. Is the oil set for every 3000 miles? Is that why it came on? I was also talking to another Marine with a Cummins today and he's running RBP (rollingbigpower.com) fuel additive in his diesel. He's said he has seen an increase of 2 mpg with the additive. Anyone else use this stuff? Thanks for all the help.

25,000 miles??? I use Amsoil, but wouldn't leave it in that long!! I change it at/before 10K, depending on how much towing, hard driving, time of year, etc. (summer dust). I had my oil analyzed for several intervals before settling on 10K (always 75%+) The oil is good, but will be pretty well sooted up well before that without additional filtration. If you are doing periodic oil analysis, and it is indicated good that long, fine. Without monitoring/testing and additional filtration, you are asking for trouble. The Amsoil can be used for up to 25K within their recommendations, but they recommend a bypass filter, frequent filter changes, and periodic analysis. The oil and additive package is very durable, but it won't help when it becomes completely saturated with contaminants.

The "Change Oil" message is set at 5,000 miles for '01 models. IIRC, there were some early models set at 3K, but would be update to 5K with any PCM update. What's your build date? If it's after November 2000, it should be 5K.

I'm not familiar with RBP, but many additives that claim performance/economy gains have a cetane improver, which can imrove mileage. I use PowerService and see mileage gains that more than pay for the additive. Also, be sure your additive contains a lubricant. ULSD may be an issue in the lubrication area.

Thanks for the advice. Time to order new oil. I'm right at 6000 miles on this past oil change. What type of oil bypass filter do you use and where do you get it tested?

I don't have a bypass on any of mine. There are several good systems to be had, and several TDP Advertisers (http://www.thedieselpage.com/vendors/main.htm) carry them. Greg Landuyt (Amsoil dealer, www.lubricationspecialist.com ) is an authority on the subject. Test kits can be had from Greg's website. Simple and inexpensive. Since you are an Amsoil user already, check out his prices.

I went the bypass filter route with the system from Oilguard.

I am still quite impressed with the system. 22,600 on the last oil change with consistently good samples. I would have gone to 25K but changed it out when the injectors needed to be replaced at 120K (ARGHHHH). Nice that it was free under the warranty - kind of makes me hope they go again in another 75K...

Search the forums for Oilguard or oil bypass filter and you will find quite a bit of info.

My 01s oil reminder is set at 7500 miles. I use the little stickers that i put on the inside of the windshield as a reminder for when to change oil. Or I use my maintnence report that I fill out every time I service the truck. If you are not ready to change oil yet, just reset the reminder in the dash and keep driving. Also, I change at 6000 miles and use rotella 15w40. Does not use oil or any other motor problems, 83000 miles and still ticking!
