According to a 1997 Chevy brochure:
8,500-lbs was the maximum 5th-wheel trailer weight (when using a C2500 standard cab/extended cab with optional C6P 8,600-lb GVWR). The 3500 models could handle more pin weight, but less total trailer weight - up to 1000-lbs less trailer weight, due to the truck being heavier - to remain within the GCVWR of 14,500-lb GCVWR (for a 4.10 geared 6.5 powered pickup truck, and with an automatic trans (1000-lbs less with the manual trans).
The 7.4L Vortec equipped trucks were rated for up to 19,000-lbs when equipped with either an auto/man trans and 4.56 gearing.
