Trying to find out how much gear oil to put in the rearend on 2006 LBZ according to amsoil's site I need between 4 and 6 pints I put in 8 and oil was just to bottom of fill hole which is the way I have always checked the level. am I wrong or is the amsoil site wrong?
I have 2 qts in mine also.
I take it you did not fill it up to the bottom of the fill hole
Ok I found in my manual .6 to.8 of an inch below fill hole but says thats for LLY, I have LBZ I think I have the wrong manual

What rear end do you have?

If you can tell me what rear end you have, I can post the procedure for checking the level.
I am not sure what I have how do I tell?

Well, with a D-Max it should be an 11.5 inch rear end.
This is the procedure for 11.5 inch.
Rear Axle Lubricant Level Inspection (11.5 Inch Axle)
Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
Make sure the vehicle is level.
Inspect the rear axle for leaks. Repair as necessary.
Clean the area around the rear axle fill plug.
Remove the rear axle fill plug and the seal.
Inspect the lubricant level.
Specification
The lubricant level should be between 17-21 mm (0.6-0.8 in) below the fill plug opening.
If the level is low, add lubricant until the level is between 17-21 mm (0.6-0.8 in) below the fill plug opening. Use the proper fluid. Refer to Fluid and Lubricant Recommendations .
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.
Install the rear axle fill plug and gasket.
Tighten
Tighten the rear axle fill plug to 33 N

There's only 1 rear end for Duramax (and 8.1L) equipped 2500HD/3500 trucks, regardless of the engine series. LB7, LLY, LBZ, LLM....It doesn't matter.
AAM 11.5".

Yes, I know exactly what that site is, but it is password protected and I can't give that information out. If you want, you can e-mail me your VIN and I can send you a copy of the option list (which will include the rear end) but I'm pretty sure it is the 11.5 inch.
So, if they say "lift the vehicle" are you checking the level on a frame lift with the axle dangling or is the lift under the wheels? What should the level be for those of us who check it while lying on our backs on the ground? ;)
