I have a 86 3500 with a real thirsty 350 that I plan on replacing with a 6.2. The engine I have is a C code in an 89 Blazer. I have run a 6.2 before and realize that they are not a real powerhouse, but I can't live with the 350 any longer. I don't tow a lot and when I do my gross trailer weight is no more than 10,000 lbs. The 6.2 has 130,000 miles and runs good. I am going to check the main and rod bearings, new head gaskets and timing chain. I am also going to have the pump and injectors done. I am told the J code engine has a little more horsepower, can I have my pump and injectors set up to the J code specs and if so do I need to change the timing? I am new to this forum and have been lurking around for a month or so and see this place is a wealth knowledge. I am not new to grease and wrenches, I have been operating class 7 and 8 trucks for 35 years and also restore antique trucks and tractors. I appreciate any advise you may have.

The main difference between the J and C code engines is the intake manifold. The J code does not have the EGR. Injectors, pump and timing are similar for both. If you put in a good exhaust system and intake you can "turn" the injection pump a little to generate a bit more power.

the pump can be set to j code specs or before you put it back in it can be turned up some. find yourself a j code intake for the 6.2 and everything else should be the same. i modified my low power 6.5 intake as shown on john kennedy's website, look there and see if yours can be modified. someone else should be able to discribe how to turn the pump up, i know it's in the website somewhere. welcome and enjoy.
