View Full Version : newbie requires help
hello all, i am new to the forum, and hope that some one can help me.
i live in the united kingdom , and have just bought a silverado k20 1984 with the 6.2l engine.
i have a few only had the truck a couple of days and have found a few questions
1) the auto box has been rebuilt just over a year ago, it work fine , but ocassionally does not go into overdrive? the previous owner has said this is a switch in the auto ? is this correct.
2) the engine throws out white smoke on first start up , but when run a while clears is this normal.
3) the truck is right hand drive , and was made in canada, the speedo etc are in km , would any one have any idea why the canadians would have built a rhd truck?
4) the external lights etc work on the truck , however the lights on the instrument panel do not work, or the internal light. are these on the same wire? and are they wired to the main light switch.
does anyone have a wiring diagram please they could send me.
5)what is the bhp and torque of the 6.2 diesel motor?
many thanks for your help, and sorry i have so many questions.
adrian
An 84 does not have an overdrive tranny. A K 20 should have a TH 400
Unless someone has swapped the box.
The RH drive was an export model
The white smoke is ok on startup but should quickly go away. If all is real well there will be no smoke on start except in real cold weatherInstrument lights are controlled off the light switch rheostat ( turning the knob)
Probably the switch is bad
HP is about 160
Hope this helps
Robyn
thank you you are right about the dash lights, they work now thank you.
the column change has a od position, it is possible that some one changed this also. i have a build sheet from gm would that stipulate which auto was fitted from the factory?
cheers adrian
It would have a 700R4 OD trans - check the TCC lockup switch, which is part of the brake\stoplite switch assy near the top of the brake pedal arm.
The K 20 was never available in the states with a 700R but it could have been fitted for an export truck or someone could have swapped it out.
True - but he did indicate it wouldn't shift into OD occasionally, so it needs to be addressed as an OD-equipped vehicle, eh?
Well this would seem the case.
What tranny is in the truck is the next question????
Almost has to be a 700R
Overdrive is controlled by the governor and the 3-4 shift valve.
Now if its the lockup you are not feeling this is controlled by the valve body as well as several electrical components.
The brake switch has a portion that causes the TCC to unlock when the brakes are applied, if this is faulty the clutch will never apply.
There are several switches in the tranny that control TCC lockup too.
These are located on the back of the valve body.
There is also an electric solenoid that does the actual control of oil to the TCC. Its up toward the front of the tranny inside the pan on the right side I believe, have to stop and think, the only time If seen the thing is with the box out and upside down on the bench.
There is a routine for checking these things.
Get a manual on the truck/ tranny that gives the procedure for checking the lockup.
Also be sure that you are getting 3 shifts.
You should with the tranny in the OD position get the 1-2 the 2-3 and the 3-4 shift followed up by the lockup. The lockup should occur somewhere around 45-50 mph depending on how it was set up.
A total of 4 shift feels is what you should have. If its the last one you are not getting its the TCC.
Yep - most folks confuse the TCC lockup 'bump' with shifting into OD.
Knew you could handle it...................
BTW - the brake\TCC switch is adjustable - it closes when the brake pedal is released and against the stop.
Most usually, no TCC is because the switch needs be adjusted toward the brake arm
The K 20 was never available in the states with a 700R but it could have been fitted for an export truck or someone could have swapped it out.
I have an '84 sales brochure and it shows the 700R4 being optional for both C and K20 trucks with 6.2Ls. It also shows the SM465 being standard and the TH400 as another option.
thank you guys for your help. i think i need a new brake switch, as the brake light stays on sometimes. This i feel according to the help and advise you have given could be part of the cause of the shifts.
i am used to petrol/gas v8 engines and manual transmissions, so the diesel is all new to me , and so is the auto. the auto is a th700.
many thanks adrian
Try adjusting the switch first, Adey - it's simple, just move it towards the brake arm a click or two
