i just changed my tranny fluid (well a filter and 8 quarts)..i told the doOd at the counter (gm dealer) what i had, a 06 6 speed allison, he sold me dexron-III, said this is what they use in the shop...well when i pulled the dip stick it said to use dexron-VI....am i OK?

I wouldn't use the Dex III. Dex VI is semi-synthetic, and backward compatible, but 8 qts is a lot to dilute it. Either get some Dex VI, or a good synthetic, like Mobil 1, Redline, Amsoil, or Transynd.

8 quarts is 1/3 of the total amount the trans holds..
i searched III and VI and found there the same viscosity..
im pi$$ at the dealer that they would sell me this III, but i should have searched more myself..

Go to the Allison Transmission website and check out their FAQ's.
"Q. Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) - Can I use synthetic fluid?
A. Any fluid that meets DEXRON III requirements is suitable for use in the Allison 1000 Series
