View Full Version : Twin turbos for a hummer 6.5L??

I have driven my Jeep with the 38" tires on it for a couple of years now and put a little over 5000 miles on it with the stock military hummer engine in it and am quite happy with it.
But now I would like to up the horsepower significantly and decided that installing twin turbos would be the easiest and the kewlest.
As some of you know the hummer engine has two separate intakes, one for each side of the V. My preliminary thoughts include one turbo for each side, one intercooler for each side, propane and nitrous injection.
What turbos would be best suited for this setup??
Would it be possible to use the stock engine, ie injectors, injection pump and pistons??
As long as I keep the exhaust temps down it should stay together shouldn't it??
Please remember this is not for a 8000+lb truck that will be pulling another 10000+lb trailer, it is for a 4000 lb Jeep that wont be pulling much if anything, and only putting around 5000 miles a year on it.
I have the fabrication skills to pull this off, but as some of you might have guessed by now, i dont have the engineering skills!!
I also know that there are many on here that do have these skills, that is why I am asking here.
I can handle constructive critisism and even "that is just plain stupid" as long as you explain why and give me some good suggestions of the right way to do this.
I am hoping to achieve around 400hp.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

Peninsulardiesel.com has produced a few sets of headers for the 6.2/6.5 made for a twin turbo setup.

Peter Bierman has also produced a one-off twin turbo system for his Blazer. Maybe he'll step in here with more info....

Good luck,

Jim

Consider, surge line is biggest issue so use turbine/compressor maps to find best combo for the diesels limited rpm range. With properly sized twins spoolup is not an issue.

Separate intakes on a Hummer? That is news to me. Father-in-law has a 2002 and it has a single intake. Plus, the intake I used on my engine swap was also from a Hummer. Have any pics of that?

If you are going through all the trouble twin turbo'ing the engine, why not just use single turbo and supercharge it with a mechanical blower?... Just a thought.

To avoid surge the twins must be small, however, you can use a smaller turbo on your motor then go with another turbo about twice the size for a compound setup. This will yield higher boost levels at low boost setting and at much cooler charge temps with charge cooler (IC) it would rock......

Has anyone ever messed with a paxton huffer on a 6.2/6.5
The old Studebakers howled with them. I know that a belt driven supercharger is available for many applications????????????????

Some of the H1 Hummers with 6.5's have installed superchargers. Have viewed a few web pages about those conversions.

who if anyone makes a supercharger or "blower" for the 6.2/6.5

MARINEDIESELUSA.COM has a supercharged 6.5 package.

There are a couple of threads on the page about it. Someone put a 300HP in a dually. I think they are in the archives but a search will pull them up.

I think Eaton use to market a supercharger 3+ yrs ago but lost the link a long time ago and never saw anything about the intake or mounting.

Seen pictures of a few twin turbos on the web and they are all custom fabrications. Hats off to anyone who can fit it under the hood.

Haven't seen anything new or recent on twins. Last interesting thing was RJ's modified single turbo. A documented improvement. Heard of other guys doing holset turbo swaps but nothing really documented as an improvement.

The superchargers I recall seeing were one of a kind installations. Do not know af any "kits". Paxton, and a few other make the newer style superchargers (vs the old 6-71 blowers). They are typically belt driven off the front of the engine. Fabrication of brackets, and air tubing is the major work involved. Gives better low end power that the turbos, but takes engine power to operate. Less efficient than a turbo, but in an H1 one typically is not to worried about efficiency. Superchargers cost even more than a turbocharger, so most of us 6.2/6.5 truck owners consider the turbo a better deal because of lower price, kit availability and efficiency.
