Known product problem. Need to go to the dealer and get an exchange cluster and install it.
Do a search on the forum and you'll find all the info about this concern

Try slowing down...

That's what I was thinking....

"What's he doing? Shutting down at 120?? Is he crazy?" If I were going 120, and turned the key off, and back on, it'd slow down about 5 MPH each time.:D

Seriously, though, it sounds like a bad cluster. I'm assuming you are sitting still when this happens???? The cluster is covered under the 3/36 warranty. If you are out of warranty, look for one out of a wreck, or Ebay (same thing, really). The dealer will want your firstborn for one. www.gmpartsdirect.com will be about half of retail GM, but S/H may be a bit.

It seems to be a known problem according to my dealer. My 2003 has failed twice (at about 38,000 and again at about 52,000). My bro-in-law's 2003 failed twice while under warranty. The only fix is a replacement cluster, a little over $400 at the dealer. Both times I complained to GM customer satisfaction, and got the price cut in half. The dealer says no recalls because it isn't a safety issue.
