Following the vague article referenced by RdTxTd currently in the "Industry News" forum ...

Honda has announced a plan to introduce diesel cars to US by yr 2009. The engine emissions will meet strict CA stds without the need to carry a tank of ammonia {the only other present option for reduction of NO} , thus paving way for the first sizeable reintroduction of diesels to US car market in some years.

I saw article in NYT this AM , referencing an article by Bloomberg News; the Bloomberg article is good , currently available from International tribune at :

Other decent relevant media at :

[I looked in google for 'Honda Diesel'].

For more info on some aspects regarding the ammonia operations, google
"Selective Catalytic Reduction" ; specifically note first two links here:

Thanks for the follow up, Tom.

Honda's technology sounds interesting. I wonder how restrictive the reactor is. The first article says the system requires about a kilowatt of electricity. Anyone have an idea what that means in terms of horsepower?

My recollection is 746Watt=1HP.

According to : http://www.autozine.org/html/0_spec.htm , SAE: American standard. Measure at 99kPa and 25

Most of the news article links above are now defunct. The good article on the Honda advance was published in the InternationalHeraldTribune Sunday May 28, '06, done by BloombergBusiness.

If goto the site <http://www.iht.com> , then enter "Honda diesel" into their search bar, and press "Go>>" , you see a listing of articles....

Honda gives diesel a cleaning
By Alan Ohnsman and John Lippert (Bloomberg News)
Honda Motor, aiming to build the first diesel car that meets pollution rules across the United States, has patented a new method to curb smog-forming gases. "

Click on "Honda gives diesel a cleaning" and that yields :

Still active, and illustrative, ...:

I've also been anxiously following the Honda diesel plans. While I love my Volkswagen TDI and my Chevy 6.2, if Honda builds it and brings it, I WILL buy it!!! I can't complain about my TDI so far...90k miles just serviced, first brake replacement rears only...and that's all...timing belt not due again til 120,000. 52mpg every time, all the time.
