Welcome to the Forums!

Being it is a 3/4 ton, and has a TH400, it will be a J code 6.2. The J code (8th digit of the vin) is the HD model, and won't have EGR.

As far as what to look for, the list is pretty extensive. Your best bet would be to search the 6.2 and 6.5 Forums for specific questions. Otherwise, others will chime in here with some advice.

thanks for that bit of info, I was hoping it was an hd model. I am going to take the 6.2 out and convert my 78 p/u. the suburban is all rusted out and such.

hello all,

murphy: the 6.2 is good and the th400 is also good at least mine was in mine. what did you plan on doing with it? pulling, just light purpose? is your 78 a half ton?

just some thoughts,
Don

Well my 78 has a 8" lift with 38" tires and is 3/4ton with a dana 60 front(1 ton). its also my daily driver. I do moderate towing with it and the occational oh crap tow. I'm just looking mainly for the 5.7mpg 350 to hit the road along with the emmisions crap they make us go threw up here its worse then cali.

and I have always had a love affair with diesels. the truck has a th 400 in it now that will be geting rebuilt. and I will be chaning the gears after i get the motor swap done so I can see how much they need to change. if i get 12mpg out of this thing i will be more then satisfied, and im not looking for anything that will win any races either.

I commercial fish in the summer and if i would have has a decent year i would be puting in a ctd but im on a budget any my bud has this for cheap.

The 89 1 ton will have the exact same engine as the Suburban you were looking at, with the exception that it might have the serpentine belt system instead of v belts. It will still have the mechanical fuel injection system. Electronic engines didn't appear until 1994.

The 89 will most likely have the serpentine belt system which is a nice perk.
If you can get it right its a good deal.
Be sure when you redo your 400 in "your" truck that you tell the tranny folks you are goung to drop in a diesel. The governor and a few other parts in the tranny need to be changed.
Also be sure you use a diesel converter.

Good luck

sweet, thanks for the information. tho I will be wanting to switch it over to v belts as i have a few special acc. that i built spacific to v belt that would take me monthes to reengener for a sept. set up.

again thanks for the info.

The '89 water pump and fan/clutch won't work with your V-belt. The serpentine system has the water pump and fan turning in reverse direction. I strongly urge you to reconsider/reengineer your accessories. Serp. pulleys can be had to replace the V-belt pulleys. Another advantage to the serp. is readily available cooling system upgrades (like dual stats and HO water pump). The serp belt is also much less prone to slippage and there's no constant adjustment.

yeah I was just thinking about that too.

i have a custom 200amp alt that i milled the imput shaft down to mount it in a funky way. also have an oba system that i made and the shaft isnt long enouht to facilitate a serp pully, may have to mill another shaft for that, or make a new compressor.

ah ha. I will modify a pully then pigy back a v drive pully off the serp pully to drive the oba. then i'll just have to extend the shaft on the alt. to mount in the stock location.

these have the hydro boost brakes right? or do they use a vacume pump like the 6.9 fords do to run the brakes and trans and heater stuff. my truck is a 78 so the trans kick down is electric and the heater controls are manual.

Hydroboost. If you have no other need for vacuum, no need for a vacuum pump. The TH400 has a vacuum modulator, so you may have issues with that. Normally, there will be a vaccum valve mounted to the IP to "modulate" the TH400.

Your "piggy back" pulley should work to get you around that issue.

Ok so UPDATE.

I found a 88 k30, this would have the J code engine correct?

ok so I bought this 88 k3500 6.2 today. when i start it, it cranks for about 7sec before it lights but if i give it a bit of pedal it lights right off followed by a bit of white smoke. it idles fine right about where its suposed to. what could be causing this or is this a "sudo" normal thing?

thanks for the help.

p.s. drove it 142miles back to my house and got 17.1mpg averaging 55-60. with some hills. also p.s pump isnt the remote resovior type.

Ok so whe I yank this motor what all needs to come with it? I know the hydro boost the tourqe converter from the tranny(same tranny i already have) the radiator(BIG). so ok what else, what electrical do i need to scab off it. Im really electrical and mechanical so making wiring harnesses isnt a big deal.

erm I think there is a thread on this already.......
