Since I was unable to find info regarding symptoms for this problem, here goes: truck began making much more noise through the intake (if you have a turbo, you may not hear this),higher EGTs, very rough idle that smooths out with higher RPMs, ever-present white smoke increases with heavy throttle loaded.

I may have gotten lucky because my spring was collapsed just enough that light pressure will take it off the seat. The only thing holding it open was lifter pre-load. I'll know tomorrow if it got bent.

Please note this is with intake spring failure, exhaust will behave differently.

Hope this is helpful for someone.

You are very lucky the little beastie did not swallow the valve.
Many times if the spring gives up the keepers will come loose and that is the end of it in a hurry. They make terrible crashing noises for a few seconds then you need a dust pan and a broom.
Glad to hear you got by without the sinister stuff.

For $6 and about 4-5 hrs it is back to good, but after driving the other truck I realized it was down on power. Bad pump? We'll see.
