I just bought an 06 with the LBZ was wondering what fuel additive I should use, dont pull much so something that helps mpg would be best for me.Had an 04 with LB7 I used a power serve additive, was happy with it but didnt know if there was anything better especially with the new fuel regulations. Any ideas?

Welcome to the Forums!

Have a look at THIS (http://www.thedieselpageforums.com/tdpforum/showthread.php?t=23293) topic. It should answer questions about what you've been using, and other options.

I have been using PS (gray bottle), and will continue using it.

Sorry Dmax....but a fellow member (guess who?)told me he wouldn't pour Power Service in his drain oil barrel.

I use FPPF total power every tank year-round. This is the best additive there is.

I don't have to guess who.... I wouldn't use it there, either. FPPF may be good stuff, but I wouldn't say it's any better/worse than PS, Racor or Stanadyne. All the products make claims, but none we'll discuss here have been shown to cause harm, or don't do what they claim.

BTW....Racor and Stanadyne are the only additives recommended/accepted by GM. They could deny warranty service for using anything else, if they wanted to.

I won't/don't plug any product here, good or bad. I only relay my experience, and the experiences of others. I've heard Amsoil has good additives, but I haven't used any of them. I use other Amsoil products, though.

I've been using PS for more than 6 years, and Stanadyne before that. Show me why I shouldn't use PS. What makes one product better than the other?

where can one find these additives? Any store to look in besides trying to purchase on the internet.

While this old Stanadyne test did not include my favorite additive FPPF Total Power, it shows where PS ranks among many others.

There have been tests that have showed LOSS of lubricity by using certain products, and back a ways, Power Service was reputed to be heavily into the use of alcohols.

P.S. Stanadyne blue is my second choice...

I'm familiar with that "Marketing Bulletin". It is 10 years old, but there is some truth to it. PS, at one time, did contain alcohol. Prior to the print date of that bulletin (Stanadyne didn't have current information), PS changed their formulation, and discontinued alcohol use. There was a time when alcohol was a desirable additive to Diesel fuel, but the more current use of aluminum and other component materials caused problems with it. I have a service/repair manual for a 1956 Cat D-4 that recommends alcohol blending for cold temps or fresh engines during breakin (thinner fuel for tight tollerances). The aluminum parts on the Cat fuel system are in the governor assy, which don't contact fuel (or not supposed to, anyway).

I would not consider that document for any basis of product selection. Even the Stanadyne formula used for that "test" is no longer a valid formulation. Also, I suspect the reason FPPF wasn't included in the test was either it wasn't considered at the time to be a "comparible" product, or it wasn't in production. I don't know enough about FPPF to know how it compares to current products, but I won't say it is a bad product, either. All products will offer a similar comparison, showing how their products will perform better than the others. This is why I discard all marketing documentation, for any product. They are good for a basic introduction to the product, but that's it. Very few products (of any type) offer any real-world comparison.

I value your advice, John, but I need more than a 10 year old marketing brochure to make a decision on current technology. You may be entirely accurate, but you'll have to show me, although I'm not from Missouri. I'd abandon PS in a New York minute if there is a better product that provides what I need.

FPPF has independent lab tests, but live in the stone age. A simple pdf would sure be nice, but...

I have not personally used Amsoil's diesel concentrate but they just reformulated there's to include ULSD fuels. I have been using FPPF Total power from kennedy diesel and I have never had any water or fuel problems with it. I am planning on switching to Amsoil's ADF as soon as my supply of Total power is gone. I keep detailed MPG records so I am curious if Amsoil will give me better economy.

I have been using the following for 20K since new - no water in either filter (Pre- CAT and OEM). Results seem good so far.

tried few bottle s of power service, in van , pickup and the benz diesels. definetely saw a increase in fuel economy in all 4 diesels,.5 mpg at best. less smoke and smoother starts in older benz diesel, and a slight increase in performance, which i d say is more in smoothness of operation in all others.

Not many of you were there to witness how lousy Brandon's truck ran after making a fast pass on nitrous at Weekend on the Edge last year, but it was BAD as he ran it back on the trailer. It basically had a dead miss on one cylinder. With the dyno competition coming up the next day all we could do was dump a heavy dose (whole bottle) of Total Power and hope for the best. The longer it ran, the better it got and managed to dyno 650 RWHP after just a couple of hours of idling...
