View Full Version : Mechanical lift pump
The mechanical lift pump stopped pumping on my '82 6.2L. I had an electric fuel pump sitting on the work bench so I put that in. It was parked outside in the rain so I just connected a single piece of fuel line to the inlet and outlet on the bypassed mechanical pump to seal it off and get going. Can / should I just leave the old mechanical pump attached to the engine or should I pull it off and put a plate on? It doesn't seem to be leaking at this point.

Probably best to use a block off plate, but, if isn't going to leak anything into the engine now, so you'll likely be ok.
It will probably make some noise eventually though.
A blockoff plate off any SBC gasser (ex 350) will bolt right up to the 6.2, so a block-off plate is available for cheap, get a annodized red or something!
Oh, and remove the pushrod too, don't leave it flopping 'round in there...

Thanks John, I will get to soon. The bad news is I will have to crawl around under the truck again, the good news is that it is high enough so I don't have to jack it up.

Hello All,
On my 87 6.2 I added the turbo and put on the drain tube that mounts to the block and did the sbc block off plate. I was pulling out the old mechanical pump (some one had replaced with electric long before I got it). I notice the push rod that runs the pump fell out. Looked at the push rod and one end was kinda rough. Yep it broke in half at some point and no one ever pulled out the other half. They just rerouted the lines with electric pump. then vwala the truck runnith again.
thanks for listening,
hope this helps someone,
Don
