starter ring gear question

I'm building up a long block for my 89 6.2.My starter ring gear seems to have to little clearance to the back of the engine once bolted onto the crank.Is there a specific clearance this gear should be shimmed to in order not to contact the rear of the engine and still fit into the transmission housing without binding?(auto)

Just checking here, but check to see which way you have the flexplate installed on the crankshaft, you may have it on backwards.

That's all I can think of here, haven't measured the clearance though.
