My tranny will run at around 130-140 when city driving. I heard that transmissions could be too cold. Is that too cold and would it hurt to put a thermostat in line before the cooler?
This is on a 700r4 with amsoil synthetic.
Thanks,
Kyle

NO thermostat in the line! A thermostat controlled bypass would be the ticket. Restricting the flow will kill the tranny.
It should be warmer than that, especially with city driving, but shouldn't hurt anything. Where is your temp sender? Is your fluid routed through the radiator tank? External coolers are highly recommended, but you should still be using the OEM radiator tank cooler. 130-140
Is your city driving mostly stop & go or cruising around fast enough to keep the TC locked? Mine will run in the 140's running fast enough to keep the TC locked.

Ok, i routed it through the external cooler first and then throught the radiator. That helped raise the temps alot. It is at around 160 -180 now depending on what kind of driving I am doing. My temp sensor is near the top of the pan. It gets to 190 though on freeway driving. Does that mean my torque converter is not locking?
I wouldn't think it is locking. My box runs it's coolest on highway driving. Stop n go is what heats mine up quicker than anything.

I wore these guys out with temperature questions a few weeks ago: http://72.22.76.69/tdpforum/showthread.php?t=23879
I made a 60 mile round trip the other day and watched the temp closely. The outside air temp was about 85. The tranny averaged 157 to 161 on the road at 60 mph. It was running in the 170's in town in stop n go.
This is only running the cooler in the radiator with a 180 thermostat...
