GMDiesel

I'm looking to save money on transportaion costs for a powerwashing business. Currently using a Ford E250 with a straight 6, OD Tranny. 3500# of weight loaded. Averages 10 mpg.
Increasing Fuel mileage to 14, 15, 16? with a diesel would cut fuel costs dramatically.
I once had a Ford E350 N/A 6.9 liter Diesel and the noise was fatiguing. I know the GM diesels are quieter.
How does the Non-Turbo 1995 variety engine compare with a turbo 1998 version? Interms of problems, reliability and mpg?
What concerns are there with the 6.5 diesels? Is the non turbo a more reliable choice.
I do not want to sink a lot of money into repairing inherent design flaws, nor do i wish to outlay $6000 to rebuild a poorly designed engine. I do not mind performing some upgrades to improve durability and known problem areas.
Advice on questions asked would be greatly appreciated as well as some mods to help improve durabilty, reliability and fuel economy.
Finally any comments on the older van bodystyle, comfort vs the new style.
Thanks!
