What's the MAX Acceptable Coolant Temp?

Just wondering, what is the maximum, sustained temperature that is considered safe for the coolant temperature? Also, how about maximum temporary (like pulling up a hill) temperature?

While we're on the temperature subject, how about tranny temp's? What's the safe level here?

If you are seeing more than 225 any time, you need more cooling. The fan should cut in around 215 and then the temp should drop.

How much extra temp does each "dash" on the gage represent?

Thanks, Robyn. My fan does indeed cut in at about 215 - sometimes earlier (if it's not too hot out).

Spring - I don't have the truck with me to look at it, but if IIRC, each little line equals just over 5*.
