OBD I is a piece of cake. The procedure is posted on several websites, as well as the member's section of this site.
Simplicity. Jumper the 2 top right pins of the ALDL connector under the dash with a paper clip or other suitable method, and turn the key to run (no start). The SES light will start to flash, and each code is repeated 3 times. If you get a "12" (1 flash, short pause, 2 flashes, long pause, repeat), that means the diagnostic mode is working, and you have no stored codes. If there are stored codes, you just need to record them, then look them up HERE (http://www.thedieselpage.com/members/trblcode.htm). All codes are 2 digits, 12 to 99.
All bets are off with an OBD II. You need a scanner for them.
