After realizing that the brokem glow plug did not hurt anything in my engine, I checked my timing this morning. I did a good job of tuning it by ear. At 1400 rpm it was 1.5 degrees ATDC. I am going to try to go to 3 degrees advanced at 1400 and see how I like it. I am just glad my number 3 cylinder is ok after finding or breaking its glow plug tip off.

I tried to advanced the timing to 3, but I can't get the pump to rotate anyfurther, It is 1 degree advanced at 1400 rpm now which is fine. I don't really feel like messing with it much more. I put manual switches in for the cold advanced and fast idle soleniods. The switch for the fast idle solenoid made it really easy to check the timing at the same rpm each time. The cold advanced on mine advances the timing around 3 to 4 degrees and the rpm increases. Does anyone know why the rpm increases when the cold advanced increases it by 4 degrees? I have the fast idle and cold advanced solenoids wired completely seperate so that is not why.

Advancing the timing makes for more power up to a certain point. The HPCA compensates for a cold engine that burns the fuel more slowly. Without a load on a hot engine, the HPCA will increase the rpms, under load however, you may notice less power and a lot more noise if the engine is optimally timed. The N/A engine can use between 2-4 BTDC at 1300rpm - best to experiment and see, as all engines aren't equal (wear, timing gears/chain etc.). In your case, you don't have anymore adjustment, so experimenting is moot.
