I sell take off wheels and tires from conversion companies. I just installed a set of the dodge 2500 polished wheels with the 275/70/17 bfg rugged trail radials. The chevy center cap and lug bolts work perfectly!! I have less than what just a set of tires would cost in the take 0ffs and it look great. Everyone asks me where I got those wheels!!

On my 03 I ran 285/75/16 Dominator AT and really liked it. However on the 06 trucks I wonder how the Allison will handle it in 6th gear? The gearing is perfect with the stock tires, but they are just so small. We might get away with 265/75/16, but I am concerned with going bigger than that. Towing will only make this issue worse. Not to mention adding a power tune to it.

It truly depends on your intended use. I wouldn't think that the truck, with 650lbs of torque, would really squak at a tire change from the stock 30.7" tire to a 32.8" tire (some 285s are 33" and some are 32.7") unless it's being used to the full potential of the powertrain. If you are intending to tow 15k lbs then I agree the larger tire could be an issue since it changes the overall ratio for the truck. Some people by Diesel trucks for other reasons so if you're not 20k GCWR or more and often ride empty or just with passengers the larger tire isn't going to hinder performance on the acceleration side.

That being said, there have been Allison issues reported with non-stock tire sizes as in the Costco incident. I assume these situations were not from trucks used on the light side of GCWR. I have heard of braking concerns with larger tires but those were mostly from people who've upgraded to 19.5" rims and commercial tires. Not sure if a 285 on a 16" or 17" aluminum rim would be that much worse than my 215's on 6 steel rims on my 3500 DRW for stopping but I don't have direct experience.

I was out in Moab recently and had to have seen two dozen or more brand new GMC/Chevy 2500HD trucks with the Duramax and 35" tires with a lift kit. Dealers even do those conversion out that way but it's an offroad world out there. Those trucks likely never haul much more than a dirt bike or toy trailer.

I'm considering putting 285/75R16E or 285/70R17E on aftermkt aluminum wheels. I will be hauling a truck camper which puts a lot of weight on the tires but still will be well under 10,000 lbs shy of the GCWR for the truck.

You looking at the Alcoa 17" hoops? Those are 17" x 8" I believe. I'm considering those as well as the MKW M27 which is a 17" x 9" wheel rated for about the same as the alcoa but the wider wheel will work better when I air down in the sand.

H2 wheels work and they look great. Same back space, same hole pattern and I have them on my 2002 d/a CC with 285-70-17. The front is rised two inches just to level out the truck.

has anyone tried 33/12.5/17 tires on 10" rims on the new 2007 2500hd? can you get by with just the leveling kit or do you need a suspension lift?

I'm running 285x60x18 on my '06 cc short box and pull a gooseneck that runs about 15k. No problems and don't have to worry about jacking around with the front end. This tire is almost same size a 265x75x16's that some guys are running from the standard - have fun, good luck
