I have read where some have upgraded to a 1997 air intake box and filter. What is the advantages of this -vs- an aftermarket set up?
I myself kind of like the idea of the "box" to keep under the hood air out of the intake.
Fill me in!!

I like the newer factory set up. It's quiet (if you use the resonator), seals much better than the plate filter, several OEM or aftermarket filters available for it and draws cool air from the front of the truck. Plus it has a telltale to alert you if the filter is restrictive. Fits perfect and factory quality. What more could you want?

Here are a couple of pics of my install
This one is before the resonator

and after I installed it - it really lowers the intake noise.

You'll like the upgrade, no more worrying about "did the filter seal" I always pulled the whole box out to service the amsoil filter to make sure i got it to seal right.
The round setup is mucho better.
AFE makes a cold air setup for 6.5's, Kennedy sells them, I hear they ain't too shabby in the air flow category (from someone who upgraded from the 97+ box).

I put the '97 in my '96 and it does seal better, easier to get to to clean / change, and the '97 setup has more surface area. Drop in installation. I left the resonator off, and I didn't notice much noise difference. BTW if you still have a snorkle in the fender, pull it out.

Would someone have the part numbers for this mod? Thanks.....

It would be very expensive from the dealer. You need everything up to the turbo, the complete air box, the plastic elbow and the rubber tube to the turbo. I would try a local salvage yard or if you want to search online, www.car-part.com
Peninsular Engine sells the whole factory kit for less than you can buy it from the dealer.
I have a mint condition airbox setup with Amosil 2 stage filter off my my 98 6.5L for sale....

Here is the qoute I recieved today from my local yard:
Air cleaner box from a 98 with the air flow meter and the hard plastic elbow that connects to the rubber intake hose to the turbocharger. It also includes the bracket that holds the air cleaner to the inner fender. Cost would be $100 plus tax.
Is that a resonable price to pay?
Kind Regards
Rick

Make sure it has the soft rubber piece that connects to the turbo as well.
$100 is what you should expect to pay. I think I paid more for mine, and then shipping... Oh well, it was complete.

It looks like the emission system is plumbed differently on the newer units so I a$$umed I needed to use the original soft tube!

I went as far as insulating airbox from engine bay heat.

I have a 97 and here is what I did. Just left off the top and put a K&N on. I also got a cowl indution hood to help move some air.

From the pictures it looks like your cowl hood is just open w/grill over opening. This has not caused a cooling problem, or? I'm guessing, the cowl hood would put lot's of cool air on the back of motor and push the airstream from the radiator down cooling down rear of motor more than front.
An airbox molded into that hood to the airbox from the cowl would provide a cool air supply to airbox always, thinking this would be better.
