Ok, I'm about turbo'ed out at this point but here goes...

I'm installing a Banks turbo in one of my trucks (guess which one) and was installing a test crossover pipe I had (before ordering a new one) and I'll be darned if there really isn't that much clearance..

Lets run through a couple of things.

Truck: 2wd 1/2 ton 6.2

The crossover pipe runs across the front of the enine, just below the harmonic balancer, then above the suspension, then along side the oil pan, then to the driver's side exhaust manifold, right?

I don't have the manual, but this is the only way that I see it working.

Trouble is that when placing the pipe in between the pan and the suspension it's really really tight, there is no room beside it.

So, this leads me to my next question for ya'll 1/2 ton 6.2 Banks turbo smokin' friends!

Look underneath your rig, how much clearance do you have?

Also (truck part, not turbo question) does your truck/sub have a spacer plate between the engine mount CUP and the block? My truck didn't, I KNOW 4wd models did have it (connects the tranny braces to them).

I'm thinking of having a new crossover made for the Banks setup that goes directly off the manifold, then down underneath (not above) the suspension, then back to the turbo manifold. I'll lose some ground clearance, but I'll gain some clearance between critical components...

Comments Welcome!

2WD trucks don't use the engine mount spacer, 4WDs do.

Phil,

Thanks for the confirmation! Both the '82 and the '86 don't have the spacer plates. I had made that connection about 2WD and 4WD, just wanted confirmation, since the rigs are all second (or third) hand...

Guess my truck is especially tight in some areas, hmm...

Anyone here running a Banks turbo on a 2WD Suburban or Pick-em-up-truck ?

Hey John!

I've got the Banks manifold and crossover pipe on my 2WD 3/4 ton, which should be the same as the 1/2 ton. I've got a few pics.

The first two are pics of the crossover pipe mounted on my freshly rebuilt engine with it on the stand:

Out of truck 2 (http://community.webshots.com/photo/286393940/1344550369029465272XrhYXZ)

The next two are pics of the crossover mounted in the truck on my old, oily engine:

In truck 2 (http://community.webshots.com/photo/153303040/1155049416029465272AAYPzB)

The crossover pipe is stock Banks except where I modified it to elminate the factory heat riser on the driver's side manifold.

Hope this helps!

Casey

Casey,

Thanks a bunch!

Thats what I needed to see, I think your 3/4 ton has a BUNCH more room than my truck does.

My x-over pipe is exactly like yours, and the routing is as I predicted. I wonder why my truck is so dern tight...

I'll shoot a picture tonight of what I'm looking at. It's looking like I might have to have something made up. Hopefully I can hold the exhaust shop hostage because the last x-over they made me for the ATS leaked and I never had the truck running long enough to take it back (really legal, no tags, etc.)

Clearance shot, you can see where I already scratched my pan squeezing in the x-over pipe

The mounts are loose from the removal of the ATS manifold from the other side. I actually have to lift the engine up just to get a socket on the dern bolts. Getting the manifold out wasn't pretty either...

I'm sure it's custom time!

Dang sure glad I didn't order two sets of x-over pipes from Banks now, one for the '86 and the '82.

I here you about the ATS manifold. I need to remove the manifold to get at the front 2 glow plugs and I am not looking forward to it. When I was mocking in up on a bare frame I have to lift the engine to get it on ... now I have the inner fender and A/C stuff to deal with. Needless to say I am putting that off as long as I can :)

I like the ATS x-over pipe on mine. Goes around the back of the engine between the tranny's bellhousing and oil pan then up to the manifold. Nice and clean and out of the way. For 2wd this wouldn't be an issue ... Clears my front drive shaft very nicely
