I'm interested in buying a 6.5 TD 3500 Crew cab dually. I'll be haulin the family and boat/quads so I'm leaning towards a 4x4 for a little extra traction on the ramp and the occasional slippery surface, including downhill braking in 4x4. I'll also be hauling a 28' enclosed 11,000 lb tag cross country to swap meets and to buy/deliver cars.
Feel free to tell me also if I'm doomed to failure if I were to choose a 4X4 for the task. I'm not a leadfoot when towing, nor do I plan a lot of mountain climbing while loaded. I'm the guy in the right lane with my 4-ways on when the temp starts to climb or the hill gets a little hairy.
Also, does anyone really follow the towing specs regarding Gross Combined Weight, especially after mods are made to cooling/intercooler/trans/brake upgrades??
I do plan to go through the truck I buy and upgrade all the above to prevent failures, but I'd like to know if anyone has experience with 18,000 lb GCW and up, good and bad.
Thanks,
JB
