View Full Version : Power Difference...
Is there a difference in power between a 1995 6.5td and a 1996 6.5td. It seems for some reason or another, all the 95's that we've tried seem to lack the power and take off from the 96's we've tried.

The 97's and up got more HP and torque 195HP and 430Ftlb torque. IIRC the 96's and down were 180HP and 360Ftlb torque.

Did you check the gearing on them? I bet the 96 had 4.10's and the 95 had 3.73 or 3.42 gears.

HD L65 engines (in 2500 and 3500) built before january 1st 1998, were at 190 HP and 385 pound feet torque. After that it is 195 HP and 430 pft.
The enhanced 506 block was introduced in that same period, with smaller oil jet holes and slighly beefier block.

Hmmm, I thought the L56 engines all had 190 HP and the L65's 195 HP no matter the year. Didn't we just go through this HP deal and years just a couple of weeks ago?

I have a 97 k2500 suburban, bought it used from a dealer in OH several weeks ago, salesman printed off the factory options & specs for this.
It showed; "build date:3/4/97"
"L65-190HP 6.5 LITER TURBO DIESEL"
as well as all the other goodies that I found out.
I bet you can take the vin to a GM service department & get the warranty history (got mine) as well as all the factory options.
As a former service manager, a little hint, you will probably get someone much more helpful if you go during the least busy time of the day.
hope this helps. :D

L56 (light duty - with EGR on 1500 trucks) all years = 180 HP 360 lb-ft
L65 (HD - 2500/3500) up to dec.31 1997 = 190 HP 385 lb-ft
L65 (HD - 2500/3500) from jan. 1st 1998 to 2003 = 195 HP 430 lb-ft
L65 (HD in Hummer H1 with EGR) from 2004 = 205 HP 440 lb-ft.
Note: The 215 HP 2000 model year engine was never put in production. But the enhanced block built for it was, and the rating was kept at 195/430. The lowered 19.5 to 1 compression for the 215 HP version engine was then changed to 20.2 to 1, still lower than the 21.5 to 1 for the previous 6.5 engines. The lower ratio reduce the emissions by lowering the NOx that are produced by the high temperatures.
Does anyone know what GM did bet. 97 and 98 to up the numbers (385 to 430 torque)?
