Cross country diesel race (where is Burt?)

This months Car & Driver magazine has an article about a cross country "race" with 3 diesel vehicles from the 80's. They called them beaters, but the 81 oldsmobile, 80's Mercedes and Datsun coupe all completed the trip even thought they had snow and hail to compete with.
