right now i have a 98 c1500 with a 4.3l 5spd W/T. i want my new truck to be 4x4 and a diesel what year 6.5l should i look for. i'll be driving this truck to work and to pull my quads (2500lbs) on the weekends. i'd also like to add some performance mods down the road with a big emphasis on reliabilty. thanks for your help!

I would get the newest one I could with every option available. The newer the 6.5L the better the block, or you have to look at the older 6.5L's before oil cooling jets came into play for the best in reliability in blocks. IMHO...

How's that for an ambiguous answer?? early 96 and older or 99-00 IIRC...

I'm sure other smarter more enlightened individuals will chime in here.

For $5500, Mr. Bigley's ride (aka Tough Guy) is a very good deal, IMHO.

here's a newbie question. why do the 96 and up 6.5s crack? overheating? poor maintence? the 99/00 got improvements for this cracking? if you bought a stock 99-00 6.5L powered truck what would be the first things you'd do to improve its reliability.

The blocks had piston oil cooling jets tooled into the 96.5 and up for added cooling. Many people have suffered block cracking in these areas. IIRC in 99 the alloys were changed in the block material and is better than the older style.

Later blocks with piston oilers also had smaller holes, apparently to limit the reduction in strength.
