I have, what I would consider, a lot of noise coming from the front end of my Suburban (4x4). It sounds like tire noise, but the tread on the tires are not very aggressive, and supposed to be fairly quiet. The noise starts out at low speeds

Check the oil level in the front differential. Even though it disengages, the side gears and pinion gears inside the differential case turn all the time. I recently had to replace the differential case (carrier in common language) because the oil level became low and wore the bore for the left side gear. This made quite a bit of noise that would almost go away when four wheel drive was selected.

With 300k miles I would look closely at the hub bearings.

If I pull the front hubs, what should I look for / do to check the hubs? After removing the wheel, should I just check for looseness, or are there visible clues to hub wear?
