I haven't seen this mentioned here, but an obvious way to check glowplugs is to use an ohm meter to determine resistance.
I had a no-start situation, and it was suggested (Thanks, Jim) to use the block heater to see if a glow plug problem was happening. Sure enough, with the block warm the engine fired up right away.
I checked the plugs with my meter (still installed), and they all were around 1.8 ohms. Well, volts=amps X resistance, so at 12V the plugs were only using about 6.6 amps.
The new Kennedy plugs I ordered were all around .8 to .9 ohms, or 13.3 to 15 amps. Those extra amps make all the difference in starting up a cold engine.
