I picked up a 2006 CRD Sport today! It's great! I highly recommend for anyone needing a small 4X4 SUV...

I hope this is sign that your doing well in business!! Keep us post from time to time on it would you. I have check around the WWW about the Jeep CRD's and I guess they are bit like the 6.5TD prone to overheating problems....maybe JK needs to look into a new Fan Clutch for those.

It's an intercooled inline 4 cylinder, 16 valve, 2.8L VGT producing 160HP/295TQ... it is manufactured by VM Motori, an Italian company owned by Detroit Diesel, who IIRC is owned by Daimler/Chrysler...
The first tank of fuel yielded 22mpg....The sticker claims 22-26. Generally owners see mid to high 20's after break-in.
Its fun to drive a small SUV with that Turbo Diesel feel!

There is a "chip" for the CRD that adds another 50hp/100tq to the rear wheels! TS Performance makes it...(they advertise here) The MP-8...
That little inline 4 chipped will almost make as much power as my PSD in stock trim! Hang on!

Start her off easy with a VW diesel, we bought a new Jetta TDI last fall and we love it - 44mpg so far.

I originally was looking buying a Jetta TDI, my wife wanted something 4wd though...The Liberty doesn't get the fuel economy that the V-Dub gets but its considerably higher than either of the two trucks I have! With less than 1000 miles and an empty curb weight of 4,150lb its getting low 20's (mostly in town) hopefully after break-in we'll see those mid to high 20's other owners enjoy.

Yep, you will love it. The common problem is oil from the crank case getting into the turbo/intercooler/intact. I highly recommend getting a CCV filter. I have 11K on mine and getting 18-19 MPG with B20 fuel.

I think that the AWD / 4WD small /mid-size pickup and SUV markets could really benefit from more diesel offerings. I hope to replace my 3/4 ton PU with a mid-size crossover type of vehicle but, I'm waiting for more diesels.

Best tank so far 29.8mpg...1800 miles now and counting. Who knows what its capable of after a few more miles...

I will take it to the dealer later today to find out what is wrong this time. We have been getting 18 mpg in town and around 23 mpg highway.

It has been in twice for a sending unit problem. The gauge read 1/4 tank and ran out 3 times at 1/4 tank. The first time the check engine light came on they never told me what it was, and I haven't had it scanned this last time it came on.

my 88 Jeep grand wagoneer does the same thing runs out of gas with it showing a 1/4 of a tank left. Its just a Jeep thing. I would love to have a Liberty diesel but with tuition and my car resoration business going under and all my projects and unpaid costomer bills, I can't afford to get one.

The only thing that really concerns me is that the cam (and maybe the injector pump?) is driven by a belt drive in the liberty's engine.This will likely catch a few folks by surprise after 40,000 miles or so.This is a serious maintainance item to consider.Belt failure would mean instant bad and expensive noise.Yuck.
I really like the idea of small diesels in suv's,and,having driven a liberty with the diesel,i can say i really like it.I'm going to wait however,and see what problems crop up.By then chrysler will have the little diesel in the gladiator.
Come on crysler...build the gladiator...you know you want to:D
I would not worry about the belt, as it is good to 100K miles. I would worry about if the water pump goes, it drived by the timing belt.

What build date Liberty do you have? There are new program updates available for CRD's built before 1/06...

anymore info on the torque converter stalling? my buddys liberty is in for tranny issues, he says its like it starts in 3rd gear but when he turns off the key and restarts it its fine for a while.

Providing that no mechanical damage has occured, the new software update *should* correct the problem...

Well, just over 5000 miles now...I'd say its prolly broke in now. Best tank was nearly 30mpg and a worst tank of 21mpg...On the highway driving 65-70mph it really shines 28-30mpg...in town mostly 22-24mpg... Its very fun to drive and I think it will be a great vehicle for our winter driving conditions with the ESP anti-slip drive control and 4x4.
Overheating hasn't presented itself...and I don't see how it could. The CRD has an engine driven fan and fan clutch, but it also sports an electric fan as well.
Its some of the best money I've spent...my wife really likes too. Easy to park and manuever in town and park in the garage.

I got into the program with my F150 and got an Edge dirt cheap (like 1/3 the cost of retail) just for playing with it and giving them some feedback. Yes, the above updates are available from the dealer...at no charge. There is also a recall you may want to check into.

This is what I read...
"DaimlerChrysler AG spokesman Max Gates said the front suspension lower ball joint could experience excessive wear and looseness, leading the ball joint to separate. The recall affects 832,000 Liberty SUVs from the 2002-2006 model years."

There is approx. 11,000 miles on the odometer now. The mileage is roughly 23-24 in town and 27-32 on the highway.
If you drive the posted speed limits it will get low 30's all day long....If you drive like I do, well lets just say at 80-90mph all day long you'll get 27mpg.
Short trips seem to have a big impact on mileage for the 2.8L VGT but on the highway its nice to drive 500 miles before thinking about fuel.

If you go to Jeep.com and go for warranty slot, put in your VIN and it will tell you which recalls your Liberty needs to go in for. We called on our 06 and the ball joints were not recalled. We did have to get a transmission filter exchanged and the tranny control program rebooted. It made for crisper shifts and better tranny functions. That is all we had on the MPG we get the same as above almost and it gets better with time. Just change your oil with 5w40 synthetic Rotella every 4 or 5k miles and soot will not screw up the EGR. Most important run it, get on it and blow it out when you are at good warm operating temps. Our tech said that is the way to get great service from it. Soot will be reduced with useage of the new fuel in the pumps soon.

To update...I have added larger tires, I installed 245/70/16's. Also a much more aggressive tread pattern then the stock Goodyears it came with.
Recently drove round trip approximately 500 miles with winterized #2 ULSD and Power Service additive. I now have just over 15,000 miles on the odometer. Driving 75-80mph on the interstate the CRD average just a touch under 24mpg.
