Hi all
I need some help with timing my truck.Right now it is still N/A,with a turbo and intercooler system in the near future.I have a new 6.2 military pump installed with new OEM 6.5 turbo injectors.I am using a Snapon MT480 meter,i have the instructions, and the tool for checking the position of the pickup by the harmonic balancer.I'm using #3glowplug hole for the lumy probe and using position B on the meter.
I'v done serches for timing spec's and have found conflicting info for the mechanical pumps. Some say to time 5 btdc and some say 5 atdc.
I wanted to set my timing now that i have the tool for verifing the postion of the pickup by the balancer, which was out of spec when i checked it.So i set everything up acording to instructions and these were the results i got..
With the line on the pump matched with the line on the timing cover i had 4 ATDC.
And with the pump turned 1/8" towards drivers side i had 1 BTDC
Oh yea i need to mention that i have the gear drive insted of gears and chain.
I would like to get a handle on the timing befor i install my turbo, intercooler, because it will be more critical once i start adding more air and fuel.
So do these results match any one elses? My harmonic balancer looks perfect,no protruding rubber or cracks,i have seen old ones on gassers turn on the rubber and screw up any timing attempts from the marks, but i don't think that has happened with this one,but anything is posible.
i may be going on a long haul so i would like to be confident on the timing,i'll be hauling a big load on the return 1500 mile trip.
Thanks in advance

I'm in the same situation. A good friend of mine was over last night building my 6.2. We were talking about it and were thinking about running slightly advanced timing. Not exactlysure yet.

I've always been a little confused on the issue, too. I don't have the Snap-on meter so I'm not much help but see if this link might shed some more light on the topic. http://www.oliverdiesel.com/tech/timing.htm
