View Full Version : Pulling a 6.2 from a Suburban

I am planning on pulling the 6.2L out of my 85 2WD Sub. and I have a question. According to my Chiltons manual ( which I trust about as much as a politician) you are NOT supposed to pull the eng. and trans. out as one unit on diesel trucks. Is there a reason for this?? or is Chiltons full of crap?? I would much rather pull it out as one unit if I can. I have a pretty good hoist and eng. leveler.

In general, it's best to pull the engine/trans as a unit in 2WD vehicles, engine separately in 4WD vehicles..:)

I just did this for the 6.2 swap into my jeep. I pulled the engine and tranny at once from the 86 burb..

Since this was a donor and I was tearing it apart anyway. I just took off the whole front clip. It made things a lot simpler.

The only issues I can really see would be weight and maneuverability. The diesel engines are heavy to begin with and adding the weight of the transmission just adds to that. Then, having this heavy weight and the length of the engine and transmission to thread out of the engine bay can get a little tricky...

There is no problem in pulling the engine and tranny together....it's just tricky. If you have one of the engine tilting devices on your puller, you'll be in much better shape.
