I am new to the diesel game and I want to give my 02 D/A a little more power. I pull a 12K 5th wheel and it is a little under powered on medium grades. My truck will not down shift to 4th or come out of T/C lockup so when the speed gets down to 55mph i manually down shift to 4th. I think there is something wrong but dont know what. With a little more power it may stay at 65mph and I wont have to screw around with manually downshifting. any help would greatly appreciated.

There should be about a 4 mph window while on cruise, below which it should downshift.

What happens when you push the pedal all the way down at 60 mph?

When I floor it at 60mph it just stays in 5th gear and groans along until I manually down shift it. The computer must be screwed up or maybe this is why the prior owner got rid of it.

A 2002 at 60 MPH should down shift for sure! I think it would be a good idea to have a dealer check you APP ratio. (gas peddle for full power) at 70 mph it will not down shift at full power.
