Changing optical encoder?

Has anyone attempted to change the optical encoder or have the specs on timing relative to the crank signal for the DB$? I have the electrical schematics and hope to be able to time the encoder against a crank signal using an oscilloscope. Any thoughts from some of you more in the know on the DB4?
