Lift pump sound?

Should I hear the whirring sound of the lift pump when I turn the key and the "wait to start" light is illuminated? Good hearing and low ambient noise considered, sometimes I can hear the pump (cold and warm starts) and at other times I can't. Should I be looking into this, and wheree should I start checking.
