Dr. Lee,
I have a '97 K1500 6.5 w/ 168k miles that is stock except a K&N air filter. Recently I have been pulling codes 101, 236, and 401. I do have black exhaust smoke under acceleration and at start-up there is a puff of black smoke sometimes heavy and sometimes light. The truck is initially sluggish on acceleration but will get peppy after a few seconds into acceleration. I replaced the EGR valve about 20k miles ago. I have recently replaced the MAP sensor and Turbo Boost sensor A. I have removed the EGR, cleaned it , and re-installed it and code 401 did not come up for a few weeks. Currently all three codes come up within 20 miles of erasing them. I have inspected and cleaned The MAF sensor with Electra Clean and the wire filaments look intact. Any suggestion on what my problem might be?
I apologize for the length. I wanted to give you as much info up front as I could.

Thank you,
Greg Hammond

Good Day!
You might want to post your question on the 6.5L Turbo Diesel forum. Dr. Lee knows all, but he doesn't own a truck like yours - his is a 1984 C10 with probably the nicest 6.2 ever built. If you post in the 6.5L Turbo Diesel forum, there are a few thousand of us who will see your topic, & hopefully help. ;)

Blessings!

Moondoggie delights in protecting me from having to look up TLA's like MAF and MAP. Also, I don't know any code but a little Morse Code I remember from my time as a Boy Scout. di-dah.

But if you have a question about thermodynamics or metallurgy or physics, I will be right there.

Dr. Lee
