glow plug controller or relay?

What is the difference between the glow plug controller and a glow plug realy on a 95 6.5? Can't seem to get the glow plugs to heat long enough, am confused by the posts I have read. Where can you get a glow plug controller? Is the glow plug controller and a glow plug relay the same thing?

From about 1984, up through 1993, the glow plug controller and relay were combined in one unit.

1994 and up had a similar looking unit that was just a relay, the engine management computer took over the control functions, based on temperature, etc..

If your 1996 is having problems with enough glow time, it may be related to the engine coolant sensor, or possibly the charge air temperature sensor giving the computer faulty information.

There has been information published on The Diesel Page about how to wire up a circuit to trick the ECM into more glow time.
